Scuba Trish's Dive Tobermory Page
You DIVE me crazy!
I first discovered Tobermory in 1994. This diver's haven sits at the opposite end of the Niagara Escarpment from where we live. A cove on the point of land between Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. It was Labour Day weekend and I wasn't fully certified yet. It just happened that my sister and her husband were taking the family to Tobermory for the last weekend of camping that they could get in. We decided it sounded like a good idea. The eight of us and our dogs set off for Land's End, a wonderful campground we'd never been to. It was idealic. The weather was cool at night and warm during the day. The campsite was big enough for all of us and clean too. Even the bathrooms were clean!
We took the glass bottomed ferry over to Flower Pot Island and hiked all day. The Blue Heron Ferry takes its passengers over a wreck or two and gives non-divers the opportunity to see what lies below the water, just past the Big Tub lighthouse. On the island paths travel through lush forests. There are some caves to see. Then of course there are the two nature made flower pot shaped structures that gave the island its name. Even the dogs, a Great Dane and a Greyhound/Dalmation got to come on the ferry with us and tour the island. We took a 3year old, a four year old, a five year old and a 7 year old, and two dogs and did a 5 hour hike.

There are easy paths and more difficult ones, all mapped out for hikers and walkers. There are even a few scattered campsites on the island that require reservations and the ability to rough it in the wilderness.
Tobermory has nice restaurants for all your needs. Whether you want a wine list or condiments in little packets, you will find a restaurant to suit your needs. For a treat on a hot day there are ice cream shops and fresh fudge.
Many little shops line the harbour here. Dive shops like the Diver's Den make it easy to get a fill or buy equipment. The little store on the corner sells trinkets galore. My favourite store there was the Chart Shop. A shop that sold everything from dive maps to puzzles and stuffed animals to outdoor wear. I loved the feeling in that store and we always return to it.

Another Trip To Tobermory

We went to Tobermory a few more times and on another occasion, stayed in a cabin at Land's End. A tiny but comfortable one room structure with electricity. We brought a coffee maker, a cd player, our bikes and Blue (The dog not the beer). It was great. We rode to Cyprus Lake (A provincial park) and spent the day hiking and playing. We climbed down and saw the Grotto where you can dive in a cave and go out through a hole into Indian Cove, a bay. The light shining through under the water gives it its name.

More than 20 wrecks in Tobermory!

Tobermory boasts more than 20 wrecks. Great for divers if not boat captains. A ship was recently scuttled there for the pleasure of divers and other aquatic life. The Niagara II was sunk in 30 m of water and will be a delight when we finally get to dive it. Others say it was great.

I am currently asking permission to add some links and photos from a few of my favourite Tobermory sites and hope to have some pictures and lists of wrecks etc. posted soon. Stay Tuned!

I SINK! Therefore I am!
