Chapter 6: Leading Small Groups
Chapter 6 talks about leading small groups. The chapter goals state that an individual like you will understand designated leader theories as well as emergent leader theories. Also an individual will perform key problem-solving leadership skills.

Designated Leader Theories - There are four designated leader theories that were discussed.
- 1. Trait theories - Trait approaches to leadership focus on the composite of desirable qualities that usually distinguish leaders from non leaders. These consist of 5 promotable traits, 4 emotional traits, and 9 individualized group leader traits.
- 5 promotable traits:
- Task Competency (know the work better than the average group member)
- Social Maturity (know appropriate organizational behavior)
- Self-assuredness (believe you know the task and the organization)
- Assertiveness (be willing to step forward and assume responsibility)
- Communication Competency (be able to preform leader communication skills)
- 2. Power theories - These consists of the 5 powers.

- 3. Style theories - These consist of 2 style theories
- Discusiion Style(Autocratic, Democratic, Laissez-Faire)
- Management Style (X,Y,and Z)
- 4. Motivational theories - These consist of 4 approaches.

Emergent Leader Theories - These consist of three theories.
- 1. Situational - Goodness of Fit between structure,power, and leader traits
- 2. Role Emergence - Leader emergence through competition determined by type of task and qualities of group members.
- 3. Functional - Focus on 15 position person leadership skills as opposed to the leader.
Problem-Solving Leadership Skills - These consists of 3 particular skills.
- 1. Task Leadership Skills - Contributing ideas, seeking ideas, evaluating ideas, seeking idea evaluation, visualizing ideas, and generalizing ideas.
- 2. Procedural Leadership Skills - Goal setting, agenda making, clarifying, summarizing, verbalizing consensus, establishing norms, and coordinating
- 3. Interpersonal Leadership Skills - Regulating participation, climate making, maintaining respect, monitoring, resolving conflict, and instigating good conflict.
