(A Psalm of David.)

Psalm 20)

1 The LORD (Yahaveh) answer you in the day of trouble;
The name (put for the person himself. Occ. 3 times in this Psalm: v.1, the Defending name; v.5, the Displayed name; v.7, the Delivering name.) of Jacob's God (Elohim. I.e. the God who met Jacob we he had nothing and deserved nothing [but wrath], and gave him everything. The N.T. "God of all grace". See Gen. 32:28; 43:6; 45:26,28; this Divine title occ. in Pss. 46:7,11; 75:9; 76:6; 81:1,4; 84:8; 94:7; 114:7; 146:5. Cp. also Isa. 2:3. Mic. 4:2.) shall defend you; (To this day the calling out the name of a person of rank or power will bring protection to one in danger from the violence of an enemy. I Psalms always used of God. Future as in vv.2,3,4.)
2 Send your help from the sanctuary,
And sustain (or support. Cp. v.6 and 21:1) you out of Zion (see 2 Sam. 5:7);
3 Remember all your gift offerings,
And accept (Heb. turn to ashes. This was the only way by which Yahaveh accepted that which was offered. See Gen. 4:4) your burnt sacrifice; Selah. (Here connecting the prayer of v.4 with the atonement or accepted sacrifice of v.3; the only ground on which prayer can be answered. See note at the end of Psalm 3.)
4 Grant you according to your own heart,
And fulfill all your counsel.

5 We will rejoice in Your salvation,
And in the name of our God we will set up our banners:

the LORD will fulfill all your petitions.

6 Now know I that the LORD save His Messiah;
He will answer [continually] him from His holy (= set apart. See Ex. 3:5) heaven
By the mighty saving deeds of His right hand.

7 Some by chariots, and some by horses:
But by the name of the LORD our God.
8 They are brought down and fallen:
But we are risen, and are established.

9 Save, LORD:
Let the king hear us in the day when we call.

(To the chief Musician.)
