Proverbs 10)

1 The proverbs of Solomon.
A wise son makes a glad father: (Illustrations: Joseph [Gen. 47:12. Cp. 48:2].)
But a foolish (fat, and then dense, or stupid, which comes of it, showing itself in impiety) son (illustration: Esau [Gen. 26:34,36; 27:45,46]) is the heaviness of his mother.
2 Treasures of lawlessness profit nothing: (Illustrations: Rehoboam [2 Chron. 12:1-4,9]; Gehazi [2 Kings 5:20-27. Prov. 21:6]; Nebuchadnezzar [Dan. 4:31,33]; Belshazzar [Dan. 5]; the Rich Fool [Luke 12:20,21. Cp. 16:23,24]. Cp. Prov. 11:28.)
But righteousness delivers from death (put for things which lead to death). (Illustrations: Daniel [6:22-30; 6:22. Cp. Prov. 13:6]; Noah [Gen. 7:1. Heb. 11:7].)
3 The LORD will not suffer the soul of a righteous one to famish: (Illustrations: Elijah [1 Kings 17]; David 2 Sam. 17:27-29].)
But He repels the substance of lawless ones. (Illustrations: Israel [Judg. 6:1-4]; Samaria [1 Kings 18:2. 2 Kings 6:5]; Jerusalem [Lam. 5:10. Zeph. 1:18]; the Chaldeans [Hab. 2:8].)
4 He becomes needy that deal with a deceitful hand: (As in 12:24. Ps. 52:2; 120:2. Hos. 7:16. Mic. 6:12.)
But the hand of the diligent makes rich.
5 He that gathers in summer is a wise son: (Illustrations: Isaac [Gen. 18:19]; Joseph [Gen. 47:12]; Timothy [2 Tim. 3:15. Acts 16:1,2].)
But he that sleeps in harvest is a son that causes shame. (Cp. 24:30-34.)
6 Blessings are upon the head (put for the whole person) of a just one:
But violence covers the mouth of the lawless ones. (Or, the mouth of the lawless ones conceal violence.)
7 What is remembered of the just one is blessed: (not what he remembers; see Ps. 146:4. Illustrations: Elisha [2 Kings 16:31] Jehoiada [2 Chron. 24:15,16]; the woman [Mark 14:9]; Mary [Luke 1:28,48]; Dorcas [Acts 9:36,39. Cp. Prov. 22:1]; Antipas [Rev. 2:13])
But the name of lawless ones shall rot. (Illustrations: Balaam [2 Pet. 2:15. Jude 11. Rev. 2:14]; Ahaz [2 Chron. 28:22]; Athaliah [2 Chron. 24:7]; Herod [Acts 12:22,23. Cp. Ps. 9:6].)
8 The wise in heart will receive commandments: (Illustrations: Abraham [Gen. 22. Heb. 11:8,17]; David [2 Sam. 7]; widow [1 Kings 17:10-16]; Rechabites [Jer. 35:6-10. Cp. Prov. 23:22].)
But a fool of lips (lax or careless habit of mind and body) shall fall. (Illustrations: Korah,&c. [Num. 16]; Diotrephes [3 John 9,10]. Cp. 2 Pet. 2:10. Jude 10;13.)
9 He that walks in integrity walks surely:
But he that pervert his ways shall be known.
10 He that winks with the eye causes sorrow:
But a fool of lips (put for what is spoken by them. See v.8) shall fall.
11 The mouth (put for what is spoken by it) of a righteous man is a well of life:
But violence covers the mouth of the lawless ones.
12 Hatred stirs up strifes: (Illustrations: Ishmael [Gen. 21:9-14. Gal. 4;29]; Kenites [Acts 13:50; 14:2-4].)
But love covers all sins. (Illustrations: Joseph [Gen. 40:15. Cp. 45:5-8. Prov. 17;9; 19:11]; David [2 Sam. 1]; Paul [Philemon]; Christ [Matt. 26:41. Mark 16:7. John 20:25-27; 21:15-19,&c.].)
13 In the lips (put for what is spoken by them) of him that has understanding wisdom is found:
But a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.
14 Wise men lay up knowledge:
But the mouth of the fool of lips (lax or careless habit of mind and body) is near destruction.
15 The rich man's wealth is his strong city:
That which destroys the week is their need.
16 The labor of the righteous tends to life:
The produce of a lawless one to sin.
17 He is in the way of life that keeps instruction:
But he that hates reproof leads astray.
18 He that hide hatred with lying lips,
And he that utters a slander, is lax (or careless habit of mind and body).
19 In the multitude of words there lacks not sin: (Illustrations: Job [32:2; 34:5,12; 35:16; 42:3]; Job's friends [32:3; 42:7,8]; the widows [1 Tim. 5:13]; of the "Twelve", the one who spoke most [Peter] erred most [Matt. 16:22; 26:74].)
But he that restrains his lips is wise. (Illustrations; Eleazar [Gen. 24:21. Cp. Prov. 4:26; 15:28]; Aaron [Lev. 10;p3]; Saul [1 Sam. 10:27. Cp. Prov. 11:12].)
20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver:
The heart of the lawless ones is little worth.
21 The lips of the righteous shepherd (i.e. instruct) many: (Illustrations: Job [4:3,4; 29:21,22]; David Ps. 78:20-22]; Peter [Acts 4:1-4]; Phillip [Acts 8:5-8]; Paul and Barnabas [Acts 11:26; 14:22-28]; Judas and Silas [Acts 15:32,33])
But fools die through want of wisdom (understanding).
22 The blessing of the LORD, itself (i.e. the uttered blessing, like the "words of the wise") makes rich,
And He adds no sorrow with it.
23 It is as a sport to a fool to do mischief:
But [to exercise] wisdom [is as sport] to a man of understanding.
24 The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him:
But the desire of the righteous ones shall be granted. (Illustrations: Hannah [1 Sam. 1:20]; Esther [4:16; 8:15-17]; Daniel [2:16-23]; Simeon [Luke 2:25-30].)
25 As the whirlwind passes (illustrations: Gen. 7:21-23 [cp. Matt. 24:37-39. Luke 17:26,27]; Elah [1 Kings 16:7-10]; Sennacherib [2 Kings 19:35-37]), so is the lawless ones no more:
But the righteous is an everlasting foundation. (Cp. Matt. 7:24-27.)
26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes,
So is the sluggard to them that send him.
27 The love (or reverence) of the LORD increases days: (Not necessarily in number, but in greater value and importance.)
But the years of the lawless ones shall be cut down (or made little).
28 The an unlikely hope of the righteous shall be gladness: (Illustrations: Abraham [Rom. 4:18:20]; Joseph [Ps. 105:17-21]; Hezekiah [Ps. 126]; Daniel [6:10])
But the confidence (a likely hope) of the lawless ones shall perish. (Illustrations: Goliath [1 Sam. 17:44,51]; Athaliah [2 Kings 11:1-16]; Sennacherib [2 Kings 19:23,37. 2 Chron. 32:21]; Herod [Matt. 2:16.)
29 The way of the LORD is strength to an upright one:
But ruin shall be to the workers of iniquity. (Illustrations: Saul [1 Chron. 10:13,14. Prov. 11:3]; Jeroboam [1 Kings 14:7-11. Isa. 50:11])
30 The righteous shall never be moved (or shaken):
But the lawless ones shall not inhabit the earth (or land [of promise]).
31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth (i.e. as a plant) wisdom:
But the perverse tongue shall be cut off (as unproductive).
32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable:
But the mouth of the lawless ones speak great perverseness.
