Charlie Chaplin
Actor Extrodinare
Charlie Chaplin was an English motion picture actor, director, producer, and composer. He was one of the most creative artists in film history, who first achieved world wide fame through his film proformances. Chaplin was born April 16, 1889 in Walworth London. As a child Chaplin appeared in music hall and pantamime proformances. In 1910 he toured the United States with a pantomine troupe and decided to remain in the country. Chaplin first appeared on the screen in 1914 in a film called Kid Auto Races at Venice. In the film he wore baggy pants, enormous shoes, and a bowler hat and carried a bamboo cane, defining his world-famous character “The Tramp”. He played “The Tramp” in more than 70 motion pictures. Chaplin’s style of proformance comes from circus clowns and mimes. He combined acrobatic elegance, expressive gestures, facial eloquence, and impeccable timing. His first films were silent, but when sound recording became available, he used all of its resources. In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s Chaplin was criticized for his leftist political views. Some say he ws deported because of his views, but others believe he left on his own. Either way in 1952 he established permanent residence in Switzerland. In 1972 he briefly returned to the US to receive several awards, among them a special Academy Award for his contributions to the film industry. In 1975 he was knighted in his native England. He spent his final years writing music for his films and enjoyed his family before he died on Christmas Day in 1977. Chaplin influenced the 1920’s with his humor, timing, and his fun loving character “the Tramp”.
