Breif History

James Hale of Daisy Manufacturing, invented and patented what would become the first paintball gun. This original paintgun was manufactured and used for marking trees and cattle, and was later sold for paintball use under the Nelson name. The first game of paintball was played with twelve players competing against each other with Nel-spot 007 pistols. These pistols were originally used by the forestry service for marking trees for excavation.

Playing The Game

What is paintball?

Well, combine the game of capture the flag with chess, mix in hide 'n' seek and add a large dose of adrenaline. Paintball is challenging and fast-paced. As few as two or as many as eighty can play. The basic game has two teams, each with it's own flag station and matching color armbands. Each team starts at its own flag station. A starting signal is given and each team tries to reach the other team's station, grab the flag and race back to its station. When a player gets tagged/hit by a paintball, he/she is out of the game. If a player is carrying a flag when tagged, he/she must drop the flag at that spot, then leave the game.

Playing Fields

Playing fields vary in terrain and management. Some fields have fixed stations and play areas for simple operation. Others rotate stations or change play direction every three months. If a field lacks vegetation, owners may use old tires, wood pallets and plywood to create forts, bunkers and other places for players to hide. A good field will provide a day of excitement, challenges and fun.

Bunkers - Bunkers are man-made structures on or in the ground. these are highly defendable positions used as stepping-stones for advancing or retreating.

Boundaries - Each field has well defined boundaries marked by netting, colored tape or ribbon. Players must stay within the boundaries.

Limited Time - Games usually have a time limit of 20 minutes. this speeds the action and prevents a game from gragging on for hours.

Referees - Referees are on the field during the game. They check players to determine if they have been tagged. Refs can and will remove players who violate safety rules. (Remember: Never Remove Your Goggles on Field!)

Tagged - A player raises his/her hand to show that the have been hit then proceeds to a 'dead-zone'. Tagged players cannot talk or signal to other players on the field.

Tournament Games

Tournaments have two, three, five, seven and ten person team categories. Ten and seven person teams play the basic capture-the-flag game. Five person teams play a variation known as center flag. The smaller teams are generally elimination in a smaller 'arena' type field. Points are given for flag capture, flag hang, number of opponents tagged and for winning a set.

Playing to win - or - Playing not to make a mistake

Author: Jim Murray

When I first started playing in the pro division in 1994 aganst world championship teams like Aftershock and Avalanche I have to admit I was more nervous then I get before todays games. Some games the repution of these players and teams was enough to beat me. Why was this? Why did I play sub-par against these top teams and so well against lesser opponents?

It was because these players reputations made me go out on the field playing to stay with them..not to make a mistake...because I didn't see myself at the time as an equal, thus I didn't make the moves. I had to get through this. The only way to do this was to constantly remind myself that I could either go out on the field, shoot my gun, and let them make the moves and the plays and shoot me out...or I could go out there....make moves...and bring the game to them.

This summer I had the privilege to watch HBO's NFL training camp special on the Dallas Cowboys. In that camp the veteran Deon Sanders was helping some of the younger players on the field. He gave them advice..his advice was that the players were playing not to make a mistake. HE told them that they would not win games playing "not to make a mistake". The only way to win games was to let yourself go, forget the reputations of the players your up against, and play to make plays, play to win.

The St. Louis Rams, back when they were on top of their game, used to have a saying which I have adopted and repeat on a constant basis within the Ground Zero huddle before the game: "Big game players, make big game plays!". The idea behind this is that only the best players in the league go out to make plays on the field...not go out their just to get to their bunker and shoot their guns. Anyone can do that. It's the player that decides the fate of the game who is feared and who wins games for their team.

I hope this article helps to inspire some of you, in your pre-game ritual, to remind yourself that the only way your going to win the game is to take the game to and from your opponents. That the players like Chris Lasoya, Nick Cuba, or Oliver Lang are human, yes they are not untouchable, and the only way to beat them is to face them without the fear of messing up, without the fear that they might be better then you are.

Longbow Barrel

Author: Jim Murray Publishing date: October 17, 2002 12:10 PM EST

The Longbow is a two piece interchangeable barrel system that has Patent pending Hardbore Finish, the smoothest, hardest barrel finish available. Bases are made out of Titanium and currently come in a .687 bore size. Tips are 12.5" and come in a variety of colors. You can purchase a barrel set or build it one piece at a time.

Features

Made of high grade titanium - The bases of the Longbow system are made of Titanium. Titanium has the strength of steel, but is nearly half the weight, making it an ideal metal for barrels.

Hardbore technology - Hardbore internal finishing creates a surface that is up to six times smoother than micro honing. Less drag results in less stress on the shell of the ball. This allows a more ideal paint to bore fit, with far fewer balls breaking in the barrel. Velocity fluctuations from different size or out-of-round balls are minimized. Unpredictable spin is also less likely. The hardbore finish is also pore free and will clean easily after a chopped ball and resist performance robbing gelatin buildup. Hardbore finishing is the most durable finish available on any paintball barrel. Hardbore will never wear through or flake off. The finish is up to 30% harder than micro honed finishes. This makes the bore resistant to the scratches that normally reduce the performance of a barrel over use. Cleaning is also easy since the surface is free of pores. This durable finish is used on all components of the Longbow system.

Self-centering joint - The precision accuracy of the Longbow's joint, coupled with a tapered seat, ensures that the bases and tips are perfectly centered every time. There is not need for an o-ring to compensate for the "slop" in threads.

Interchangeable tips and control bore - The Longbow Barrels have interchangeable tips and control bores. Four bore sizes allow for precise paint-to-barrel fit for maximum accuracy and efficiency. Three porting styles and a variety of tip lengths are available to suit any style of play. Sets can be purchased or built one piece at a time.

Stepped Bore - The Longbow system uses a two-piece stepped bore. The base is the control bore and should be sized to match the paint diameter. The tip opens to a larger diameter just bigger than the paintball. The larger bore allows the ball to regain is natural shape while still being guided and accelerated. The ball reaches perfect free flight before it exits the barrel.

Aircraft-grade Aluminum tip - Longbow barrel tips are made of aircraft aluminum. This is the lightest metal used in the Longbow barrel system. It is wear-resistant and easy to clean due to Hardbore finishing. Tips are available in standard colors or "raw" for custom anodizing.

Multiple porting styles - The Longbow has three porting styles to choose from. The Low Pressure tip has just enough of a muzzle break to eliminate air turbulence as the ball exits the barrel. It is very air efficient and requires less operating pressure from the marker. The Sound Suppression tip has porting down most of its length to reduce the sound level of each shot to the lowest practical level. The Tournament tip combines a balanced mix of low pressure porting and sound suppression.
