Here's a popular line used to try to silence people seeking the truth. I hear it alot.
Eat the meat and spit out the bones!
This is a phrase that's been used on me when questioning a false teaching or an error. It is a plea to allow the mixture of truth and error / good and bad because some truth or good is present. It is feared that removing the bad would stop the good, so the mixture is encouraged. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water!
The following scripture is often quoted to support this.
1 Thess 5:19-21
Do not put out the Spirit's fire; do not treat prophecies with
contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good.
Notice what is not quoted - the very next verse.
22Avoid every kind of evil.
How are we to avoid evil if we are encouraged to accept mixture?
I guess these people have never heard of a little leaven.
Galatians 5:7-10 AMP
You were running the race nobly. Who has interfered in (hindered and
stopped you from) your heeding and following the Truth? This [evil] persuasion is not from Him Who called you [Who invited
you to freedom in Christ]. A little leaven (a slight inclination to error, or a few false teachers) leavens the whole lump [it perverts the whole conception of faith or misleads the whole church]. [For my part] I have confidence [toward you] in the Lord that you will take no contrary view of the matter but will come to think with me. But he who is unsettling you, whoever he is, will have to bear the penalty.
Perhaps this is why we desparately need leadrers who can teach sound doctrine and refute people who oppose it --
Titus 1:7-11
Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he must be blameless—
not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not
violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather he must be hospitable, one
who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy and
disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has
been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and
refute those who oppose it.
For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers,
especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced,
because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they
ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain.
Can the leaven really be left in the loaf? Can one really eat the bread and spit out the leaven?
