His Lips, Anointed with Grace

You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever.

I was drawn to Psalm 45 recently. The NIV bible has this instruction preceding the Psalm:
For the director of music. To the tune of "Lilies." Of the Sons of Korah. A maskil. A wedding song.

This Psalm is about a Royal wedding, bringing to mind all the sights, sounds, movement, splendor and emotions of the occasion. The song falls into two parts - the first is addressed to the king - the second, addressed to the bride. You can just feel the longing, the love between the bride and the groom as you read this psalm.

The language and images of this psalm are very similar to the Song of Solomon. Psalm 45:2 reminds me of the following passage, a description by the bride of her lover.


10     My lover is radiant and ruddy, outstanding among ten thousand.
11     His head is purest gold; his hair is wavy and black as a raven.
12     His eyes are like doves by the water streams, washed in milk, mounted like jewels.
13     His cheeks are like beds of spice yielding perfume. His lips are like lilies dripping with myrrh.
14     His arms are rods of gold set with chrysolite. His body is like polished ivory decorated with sapphires.
15     His legs are pillars of marble set on bases of pure gold. His appearance is like Lebanon, choice as its cedars.
16     His mouth is sweetness itself; he is altogether lovely. This is my lover, this my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.

Notice the lips in both of these passages - anointed with grace - lilies dripping with myrrh - his mouth is sweetness itself. The lover in these passages point to Jesus Christ, the Messiah King. His lips - His words are full of grace and truth (Luke 4:22, John 1:14). His words are strong and sweet, satisfying like lilies. When we value 'His lips' we value the words from His lips. When we value His word, our souls will be filled with the sweetness of their taste.

How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

The bride longs for the 'kisses' of her lover; His lips, His words, His presence. Do you long to be filled with His sweetness?

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth— For your love is better than wine. Because of the fragrance of your good ointments, Your name is ointment poured forth; Therefore the virgins love you. Draw me away!

New Things Declared

See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.

You know it's spring when you see the spring flowers appear.

I love this time of year. Springtime is a time when new growth appears. Each spring as the snow melts and it gets warmer, I eagerly look for pink flowers to appear on my flowering plum tree. These pink flowers are beautiful and when the tree is in full bloom they fill the air with their sweet fragrance.

Usually as the snow melts, the snowdrops flower first. The green shoots sometimes come up thru the snow... buds appear, then the tiny white flowers open. I know when I see these my plum tree will soon bud and after the buds -- the sweet pink flowers.

It's interesting to note that before the flowers bloom -- they are announced -- you know they are coming. The green shoots announce the buds. The buds announce the flowers. The snowdrops announce the soon to come flowering plum tree. This whole process is amazing.

Likewise before you 'bloom' or have new growth in Christ the Lord will announce it. I find this incredible. : )

Lord, help us to be open when You declare new things in our lives. Thank You that You announce these new things to us. Help us listen for and accept Your new announcements.

Perfect Wisdom

Do you know how God controls the clouds and makes his lightning flash? Do you know how the clouds hang poised, those wonders of Him who is perfect in knowledge?

I came across this discussion of the design of our galaxy recently. From:

It shows a composite view of our Milky Way galaxy as it would appear edge on. Our Solar System is located near the edge of the galaxy in a relatively unpopulated region between spiral arms. Now, only 5% of all galaxies are spirals. Life is only possible in spiral galaxies. Our Sun is located in the region of our galaxy that is called the galactic co-rotation radius. This is the only location within a galaxy where stars do not drift in and out of the spiral arms as the galaxy revolves. So it is the only location within our galaxy that would support life.

The laws of physics are extremely fine tuned to permit the existence of matter, much less, the existence of biological life forms. For some of these physical laws, a change of as little as 1 part in 1037
(10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) would prevent the universe from ever containing any kind of life.

This really highlights the wisdom of the design of our galaxy. Not only is this region of our galaxy ideal for the support of life, but it also affords us an excellent view of our galaxy and universe (unobstructed by the gaseous nebulae found in the spiral arms and other, more crowded parts of our galaxy).

It appears that God has allowed us such a good view so that we could see how "the heavens declare the glory of God" (Psalms 19:1). Even more amazing - the Lord calls each by name (Psalm 147:4) and not one of them is missing (Isaiah 40:25-26)!

Give thanks to the Lord of lords:

EVERY TIME

Psalm 147:3     He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Psalm 145:13-14     Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to all his promises and loving toward all he has made. The LORD upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.

The heart of Jesus was broken for you, and God's heart was broken as he gave his only Son to die. We serve a wounded Savior, one who has suffered and understands the broken heart. But the great news is, he is also our Great Physician and he is the one who can heal your broken heart.

Thank You Lord for Your promise to be close to the brokenhearted, that You will save those who are crushed in spirit. Lord, please be with the broken hearted, please minister to them in personal and mighty ways. Dear Father, please rekindle their hope, empower them as they hold on to their faith. Pour out your Spirit with power, strengthening them - lift up their hearts. Help them find a renewed sense of hope in your presence. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Lift Up a Standard

'Lift up a standard' in the following verse is neat! Take a look at these different translations.

Isaiah 59:19(NKJV)     So shall they fear The name of the LORD from the west, And His glory from the rising of the sun; When the enemy comes in like a flood, The Spirit of the LORD will lift up a standard against him.

Isaiah 59:19(AMP)     So [as the result of the Messiah's intervention] they shall [reverently] fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him and put him to flight [for He will come like a rushing stream which the breath of the Lord drives].

Isaiah 59:19(DARBY)     And they shall fear the name of Jehovah from the west, and from the rising of the sun, his glory. When the adversary shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of Jehovah will lift up a banner against him.

The raised standard or banner shows whose camp a people belong to. The Lord raising a banner encourages His people, that they belong to Him and are under His protection - He will fight for them. The Lord raising a banner intimidates the enemy. In this verse it is meant to put the enemy to flight -- or scatter. The Lord raising a banner, leads His people forward to victory!

Psalm 60:4-5(NIV)     You have given a banner to those who fear You, That it may be displayed because of the truth. That Your beloved may be delivered, Save with Your right hand, and hear me.

What is the Lord's banner over us - His people?

SOS 2:4(NKJV)     He brought me to the banqueting house, And his banner over me was love.

It's interesting to note that the (AMP) version for Isaiah 59:19 references the below verses which also mention the feast or banquet hall.

Matt 8:11(AMP)     I tell you, many will come from east and west, and will sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,

Luke 13:29(AMP)     And [people] will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit down (feast at table) in the kingdom of God.

Luke 13:29 appears in a discussion about the narrow gate and is clearly looking forward to the marriage supper of the Lamb (Rev 19:9).

Lifting up the Lord's banner and the narrow gate are also seen here in the assurance of Zion's salvation.

Isaiah 62:8-10(NKJV)     The LORD has sworn by His right hand And by the arm of His strength: “ Surely I will no longer give your grain As food for your enemies; And the sons of the foreigner shall not drink your new wine, For which you have labored.
9 But those who have gathered it shall eat it, And praise the LORD; Those who have brought it together shall drink it in My holy courts.”
10 Go through, Go through the gates! Prepare the way for the people; Build up, Build up the highway! Take out the stones, Lift up a banner for the peoples!

Isaiah 60:18(NIV) No longer will violence be heard in your land, nor ruin or destruction within your borders, but you will call your walls Salvation and your gates Praise.

The Lord's people are to lift up a banner in His name to show others the way, the way thru the gates of praise.

John 14:6(NKJV)     Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

Psalm 100:2, 4(NKJV)     Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before His presence with singing.
4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

Psalm 24:7-10(NKJV)     Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.
8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O you gates! Lift up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in.
10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory.

Sooo

Sooo Lifting up a banner, a standard -- singing praise to the Lord -- is a spiritual weapon -- a way to show others where the narrow gate is and exactly who is the way, truth and life!

Thank You Lord for Jesus, the way, truth and life.
Lord, help us arise and shine, and let the glory of the Lord rest upon us to be seen by others (Isa 60:1-2).

Lord, help us lift up our heads, lift up our voices, lift up our hands --- lift up a banner in the name of the Lord, go thru the gate of praise (Isa 60:18) and enter the King's court,

Lord, help us come into the King of Glory's presence together!!!!!!!

Lift up your heads! O you gates!

Sing for Joy!

Strength for the Battle

2 Kings 6:15-17 (NKJV)     And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

As we press in closer to the Lord and His calling on our lives, the enemy wages a battle that becomes more and more fierce. But as beloved children of God, we can trust the Lord to prepare us, give us strength, arm us for this battle and fight along side of us. It is the Lord who will prepare us and help us fight. It is the Lord who will help us crush the enemy under our feet. It is the Lord who will open our eyes to this victory.

Taste and See

Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

Have you ever been to a party where there was one food that seemed to disappear quicker than all the rest? People just couldn't get enough of it.

There may have been many different kinds of foods: fruits and vegetables, chips and dip, desserts... but one dip seemed to stand out more than the rest. It wasn't anything fancy, just some French onion dip, and it was even still in the jar it came in. But there was something about that dip which seemed to draw you back for more and more. It was just so good; you had to have it! Everyone commented on the dip; how flavorful it was, how good it was with the chips, etc. The only problem was that it ran out so quickly! Near the end, people were sticking their hands down in the jar hoping to get just one more little scoop of that good dip. Some were willing to get their hands dirty, and others flat out didn't care what it took to get that last bit of dip. Why? Because it tasted so good! They simply couldn't get enough of it.

Do you thirst or hunger after God in this way? Is the thirst or hunger there because you have tasted and seen that the Lord is good?

A. W. Tozer describes this taste or craving as a "piercing sweetness"...

O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need for further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made thirsty still.

Jonathan Edwards describes it as a longing to be satisfied.

Spiritual good is of a satisfying nature; and for that very reason, the soul that tastes, and knows its nature, will thirst after it, and a fullness of it, that it may be satisfied. And the more he experiences, and the more he knows this excellent, unparalleled, exquisite, and satisfying sweetness, the more earnestly he will hunger and thirst for more...

But what about these scriptures?

Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

but whoever drinks the water (living water) I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

Doesn't this promise that whoever eats the bread of life or drinks the living water will never thirst?

The answer lies in the eternal part of these verses --the bread of (eternal) life - the spring of water that wells up to eternal life. Spiritual hunger/ thirst for the bread and living water will not truly be satisifed until perfection comes and we see Him face to face (1 Cor 13:10,12). Then we will be completely satisifed.

The panting deer of Psalm 42 sheds light on this. The deer's thirst is not satisfied by removing it's thirst. It's satisfied by having access to the streams of living water - so that whenever thirst returns - and it will again and again - the deer can drink.

Charles Spurgeon sees this craving as a sign of growth.

When a man pants after God, it is a secret life within which makes him do it: he would not long after God by nature. No man thirsts for God while he is left in his carnal [i.e., unconverted] state. The unrenewed man pants after anything sooner than God: . . . It proves a renewed nature when you long after God; it is a work of grace in your soul, and you may be thankful for it.

Are you thirsty or hungry today? Do you find your worship time or devotion time so sweet that you crave more? Come drink, taste and see that the Lord is good. Do this again and again, thru this process the Lord will draw you closer and closer. Continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. (1 Peter 3:18).

Lord help each heart taste and see the sweetness of the Lord Jesus Christ. As we taste and see that You are good, use our hunger and thirst for more of You, to continually increase our growth in Christ. Glory be to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ both now and forever more! Amen.

As the Deer Pants

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng.

The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."

Have you ever felt God speaking directly to your heart? It usually isn't in a loud obvious manner. In fact usually it's only noticable by the person whose heart is being touched. What may seem coincidence or insignificant to others, forces the heart being touched to stop and pause in wonder as the 'peace that passes all understanding' floods in.

It was 2003 and the song 'As the Deer Pants' was on my heart and lips. I was thinking about the deer and it's thirst. At the time I had a thirst for worshipping in song and praying for the healing of others that my home church and family did not share. This thirst led me to go to another church a hour away from home. Somehow this thirst I had was filled there. I had just been there the night before and was questioning if this was the right direction for me.

This is when I read the above article by Tim. Guess what this article was about?! A thirst for worship that wasn't shared by his home church or family. He had asked the very same question of the Lord as I was asking. The Lord asnwered Tim by using the song 'As the Deer Pants' and the scripture from Psalm 42! The very same song I had been singing minutes before I started reading about Tim! A coincidence?!

The answer the Lord gave Tim reassured him he was on the right path. As I read further it reassured me also. The Lord used the panting deer to reassure both of us that it was not only OK to thirst for His presence and seek it out -- He was pleased with this. This did fill me with peace, wonder and awe.

The reason the panting deer was on my heart again today -- I find myself again asking the Lord similar questions. Again, I find myself going to another church (luckly not a hour away!) to fill my thirst for worship in song and praying for the healing of others. Again I was questioning this. Guess what?! As I started to worhsip in song at this church that is not my home church -- the Pastor of worship opened with prayer, paused, and said "Before we begin I'd like us all to sing - 'As the Deer Pants'". I could do nothing but weep tears of joy and awe and thank the Lord for giving me a place to be filled. This happened just a few days ago.

Today I was cleaning my emails and found the email I sent Tim thanking him for writing 'Today, God Spoke'.

Another coincidence?!

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Lord, thank You that when we seek You with our whole hearts we will find You. Thank You that You do speak to each of us in special ways. Help us to keep listening for Your voice.
