Emmy Show: Third Times the Charm?

Sunday, Nov. 11 or Nov. 18, for the much-delayed
Emmy awards, reports the trade magazine
Broadcasting & Cable. Though you might do it
in pencil. A severely pared-down version of the
show will surface during Sweeps week, according
to the publication, though CBS and the Academy of
Television Arts & Sciences had no comment.
The magazine also said that the Shrine Auditorium
would be replaced by a smaller venue, possibly
the grand ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Ellen DeGeneres would remain as host. Meanwhile,
another report on the Emmys has surfaced, this
one via the Associated Press. TV officials, said
the news service, are considering holding the
ceremony on a California military base. But
Academy spokeswoman Jennifer Price said that idea
would bring up a slew of other issues. "They'd
have to get permission from the military, and at
a time of war, do they really want a show going
on, with tanks in the background?," Price
said. A final decision is expected to be
announced by Friday. The Emmys, originally
scheduled to be broadcast live from the Shrine
Auditorium on Sept. 16, was rescheduled -- and
scaled down -- after the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks. It was called off again last Sunday,
just hours before showtime, after the U.S. and
Britain launched air attacks on Afghanistan. The
decision to call off the show was the first such
cancellation in the show's 53-year-history. Some
in the industry are said to be jittery about
participating in such a high-profile event,
though academy officials said that unprecedented
security measures were in place for Sunday's
ceremony and no threats were received prior to
the event's postponement. Both CBS and the TV
academy have much at stake. The network, which
has paid a license fee of more than $3 million to
the academy for the telecast, stands to lose
advertising revenue if the show does not go on |
