IT Direction and Standards

IT standard settings is to be able to create, document,and set a standard for all elements of the technology platform in an organization – including hardware, software, networks etc Setting overall technology direction is a challenge to the IT Directors, because technolody are dynamic it is always changing and very difficult to cope uo with its compatibility.It is difficult to distinguish real and usable products from the smoke and mirrors products. Also Setting standards in the company is very impaortant but remain one of the most difficult task. To set standards in the company which developed their IT system long back, because the company might have many kinds of technology and platforms which is not able to bting about just one standard.

Standard setting To begin standard setting is by collecting and grouping information about technologies that have been used in the company.there are key principles which can help. Then we do the Decision factor analysis, determines which criteria are important for the standard. Each criteria should be kept the same when assess the technology.

  • Level of customization
  • Interfaces with other systems
  • Current and future transaction volume required

  • Size/type of user base


  • The approach to enforcement should be built on these key principles:
    • Accurate documentation of the standards distributed to business and IT teams
    • Thorough documentation of the rationale/reasoning behind each standards.
    • Purchase approval and procurement processes that support the standards
    • Support of the business senior management .
    • Reinforcement of the standards by periodic recommendation
    • Ensuring that standards are relevant and support changes
    • Commonsense approach to make exceptions to standardise the firm.
