Arms Trafficking in Sierra Leone

On July 9th 2001 the UN held its first ever summit on the illegal trade of arms in Sierra Leone. David Shukman saw first hand the traumatic legacy of guns in Sirra Leone. In an interview he said,"Time after time I'd find myself thinking: "What can I say?" The main tragedy of the guns themselves it that they are known in Sierra Leone for the horrific amputations that they cause. Its almost like an epidemic spreading through the towns, one day you get shot in the leg, and the next day you have no leg at all.
Both sides of the fight in sierra leone in between the RUF and government there are a large number of child soldiers. For example, the UN estimates that of those fighting with Sierra Leone government forces, 1/4 are children under the age of 18.
