Sierra Leone was created by freed slaves and became a British Colony in the late 1700's. The social class that they formed was hardly made from indigenous people.
After Independence in 1961 The government was solely profited by the trade of diamonds in and out of Sierra Leone and the trade also benefited the population as a whole.
Sierra Leone is an extremely poor country. It does have substantial resources but the economy is not well- developed. This is mainly because of the 10 year long civil war. The major source of hard currency comes from diamond mining. The fate of the economy depends upon the maintenance of domestic peace and the continued receipt of substantial aid from abroad.
The ongoing conflicts in Sierra Leone have led to rufugee movements into neighboring countries. (Guinea and Liberia)
