Madwoman Mosaics--piqueassiette-WOW!
History of Pique Assiette--good links from there

Pique assiette has been translated roughly from the French as "broken plate" (among other things). Hence, broken pottery and scraps of, really, anything are used to create mosaic surfaces. The recycling aspect of the craft is a great asset, as well as the absolutely limitless possibilities for design. Now when I break a dish or piece of pottery at home, I don't fret, I celebrate the potential for a new creation!
It's a great pastime--rough and messy--hammers, mud and sponges are the tools. I wish I had taken more pictures of some of the pieces I decorated last year--birdhouses, flowerpots and wooden boxes--but as soon as the weather is good, I have boxes of shards to get going with.
The craft has some interesting lore attached--part of the charm of it--please see my related links, and when you do, you will see that I am but a pedestrian, but one who derives immense pleasure from the craft! In the hands of some, it becomes art and/or obsession (life ouvre)!!
