A Caring Hearts Project: Blankies/Caps Free Patterns

Below are a few free patterns that we enjoy using to crochet blankies & hats for preemie babies. These patterns are our originals.

Simple Preemie-Ghan
H-Hook
4ply acrylic yarn in baby friendly colors

1) ch78, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in the remnaining stitches across row. Ch1, turn.
2) Sc in the same st, -ch1-**skip 1 st, and then sc in the next stitch. Ch1- ** repeat acoss row as described, ending with a sc in the final st of the row. Ch1, turn.
3-beyond) Repeat row 2 until the babyghan measures about 17 inches in width. Then, do a final row of sc in ea st across row. Do not fasten off.(br) Edging: Ch1, sc around the entire afghan. make sure that you crochet 3 sc's in ea corner space, and crocheting 2 sc's in ea dc space down the sides. Do 2 more rounds of sc in ea sc around, making sure that you do 3 sc's in the 2nd sc of ea corner group. Fasten off, weave in ends.
(Note: You can do a scallopped edging on this preemie-ghan if you want to.) Once finished, this preemie-ghan should measure about 18X22 inches in size; perfect for a premature infant.

Mom's Preemie-Ghan
H-Hook
4ply baby friendly yarn
Ch 56:
Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc-dc in 2nd ch from hook, sk next st; *sc-dc in next st, sk 1 st, across row: sc in final st of row. Ch2, turn.
(ch2 counts of beg dc)
Row 2-54: Sk 1 st, and then crochet sc-dc in next st, sk next st, repeat across row as described, ending row with a sc in the final st of the row. Ch2, turn.
55) HDC in ea st around preemie-ghan, making sure that you crochet 2hdc-ch3-2hdc in ea corner space around; and 2hdc in ea dc space around. 56) Repeat round 55, except that you crochet 5 hdc's in ea ch3 space on each corner space around. Fasten off, weave in ends.
You can call it done here or change it a bit. One edging that looks nice is to scallop it, or on the final round, do a 2hdc group every 2nd st to the corner sp, 5hdc corner, then continue around doing a hdc group every 2nd st. Should end up measuring about 18x22 or so.

Baby Fingering or Baby Sportweight yarn
Ch 45; sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, and in each ch across row. Ch 1, turn; sc across the row. Continue until there are about 14 rows back & forth. Fasten off.
Whipstitch up the side, to join into hat base. With a needle and doubled yarn, work needle through the top row of stitches to gather the top; pull tight and tie into knot to secure. Tie it off and weave in ends.

Jean's DC Preemie Cap
F Hook
Sportweight or 4ply yarn
1) Ch4, slst to top of beg ch to form a ring. Ch3. Crochet 12 dc into ring. Slst to top of beg ch3 to finish this round. Ch3. 2) Crochet 2 dc into the top of ea dc around.(The starting ch3 space does not count as a dc in this round) Slst to top of beg ch3 to finish this round. Ch3.
3) Dc in the next st, **2dc in the next st; dc in the next 2 sts; ** Continue around as described. Slst into the top of the beg ch3 to finish this round. Ch3, turn. 3-11) Dc in ea st around, ending each round with a ch3. 12) FPDC in the first st, BPDC in the next st; continue this pattern around, slst to top of beg ch3 to finish this round. Fasten off, weave in ends.
