Using the Internet as a Research Tool

Do not plagiarize!
Plagiarism is using another person's words or ideas and passing them off as your own.  It is o.k. to use other people's words and ideas, as long as you give them credit.

Search Tips

Every search engine and multi-search engine web site has their own tips for how to best search the Internet with their search tool.  What follows are general tips that apply to all of these web sites.

Ask for specifics.  Don't just enter "plants" if looking for information on "sunflowers", enter "sunflowers".

Use "quotations" to find something exactly the way you have it in quotes.  Avoid using quotations if you are unsure of the order.  "Boston terrier" (in quotes)=information on the specific breed of dog.  Boston terrier (without quotes)=information on Boston and terriers.

If you can't find something, use synonyms.  If you tried looking for information on jobs using "jobs" in your search and your search didn't give you all you had hoped for, try using "careers" or "employment" in your search.

Search Engines and Multi-search engines
A search engine is a web site that searches the millions of web pages on the Internet for the information you request.  A multi-search engine uses several of these sites together to provide you a more thorough search.  Mr. Childree recommends the following sites for Internet research.

Search Engines:
Google
Yahoo
Ask Jeeves

Multi-Search Engines:
Dogpile (Mr. Childree's personal favorite)
Metasearch
Mamma
