In 1999 the venerable Economist magazine,
in a lead article, castigated the economics profession for its apparent
inability to make much progress in policy-oriented economic development theory
and the consequent magnitude of poverty and environmental degradation.
This critique is certainly justifiable, at least partially.
There are some who believe that simply unleashing the power of markets,
not the heavy hand of state or multilateral policies, is the key to
solving almost all, if not all problems. For those of us who regard
ourselves as fairly capable students of economics the truth probably
lies somewhere in between.
This website was built to support my economics class, but I hope
that it will also highlight the issues that will help in understanding the
context of the debate. |
