Squirrel Dog, Spotty Rock

Went to Ranburne, Alabama on June 11, 2002. Delivered the pup named Pearl to Mack Ledbetter. I think he liked her. Also picked up a pup that I named Spotty Rock. He is out of BB(1/4 Sport, 3/4 Kemmer) and Tinzie (100% Kemmer). This page is about Spotty Rock. This is Delane Widener on the right and Me and the dog is Cody. Delane is telling me all about how to breed dogs and I am eating it up cause I booked another pup before I left. Got one booked out of Pee Wee and Dixie. Naming her Ginger. Since this site is a work in progress Spotty is making an awesome dog as I type this(8-19-03). So as of now another little pup has been born out of Pee Wee and Boots and that one I will pick up in Sept of 2003. That will give me three from Lost Creek Feists. Spotty, Ginger and another yet to be named female pup. Things are going well as planned with my treeing feist breeding program. Haven't bred a feist yet but am getting the stock together.

.

This is Spotty Rock at ten weeks of age. At this point I have had him for four weeks. Already taking him to the woods. He is a very bold pup but has a lot of puppy play in him. Likes to pull the pants leg but is rapidly getting over that stage. When he pulls the pants leg I just swat him very lightly, tell him no and then he will go to the front and hunt about as well as a ten week old puppy can. At ten weeks old he will get to the front ten or fifteen feet and stop, look and listen. Seems very interested in getting into the woods but hasn't the courage yet to get very far away. I have seen him make puppy runs fifty feet ahead and then stop and look back and wait for me to catch up. About all I do with pups is take them for short walks as often as I can. They get into different situations and seem to just come along at their own pace, get more and more woodswise and eventually do what they are bred to do, hopefully. I have already seen Spotty starting to do what he is bred to do. All we have to do is keep going for short trips and get lucky. I have already gotten lucky with Spotty. Went hunting. Hadn't even set him on the ground yet and a squirrel ran right in front of us. Spotty saw him. I put Spotty on the ground and he took off after the squirrel and you would have thought Spottys little short tail was on fire. He was smoking that squirrel. Ran him about 50 ft and the squirrel disappeared and then Spotty gave him up. Boys I like this pup. I booked him and waited nine months for him. So far looks like he is worth it. I think I am going to just keep taking him to the woods for short trips and watch him get better and better. We need to get lucky and get into some squirrels. If we keep going to the woods we will eventually make our own luck. Law of average says a squirrel will eventually jump up in front of us.

Here is Spotty wanting to work a coon hide.

Here are a couple of pictures of Spotty fooling with a coon hide. I don't fool with hides and tails much but I have a coon hide hanging in a tree that has been hanging there several months. Walked Spotty past it and couldn't resist loosening the rope and let it drop behind Spotty when he wasn't looking. Sorta startled him but he came right back at it and when I pulled it up he put his feet up and wanted it. Some folks use hides and such and that is OK but I bet Spotty would have done the same thing if it had been a paper sack. Some folks say a squirrel tail helps cause it gets them to want the squirrel scent but I think the desire for the squirrel scent is bred in them. Check the size of the coon hide compared to Spotty. It is a wonder he wasn't scared of it.

Treeing His First Squirrel

Spotty treed his first squirrel at 8 months of age,by that I mean he treed and barked up at the tree. He was treeing good at 10 months of age but the season was just going out. Stayed penned all summer and when I took him out at beginning of the next season he took up where he had left off. The picture at left was the beginning of the next season. He had still never been hunted with another dog. He was 15 months old in the picture and treeing consistently. This squirrel had timbered 75 feet and Spotty had stayed with him and was treeing hard when the squirrel stopped in this picture.
