a whale of a time

The biotech for the Hatteras District, Karen, is also part of the marine mammal stranding network. So any time a dolphin, whale, whatever washes up on the beach (dead or alive), she gets called out to take care of it. This could mean euthanizing it and performing a necropsy or getting it taken to rehab. I got to help necropsy a few dolphins this summer, but the coolest by far was a huge false killer whale that was stranded.

The whale was alive when it stranded
It couldn't be helped, so it had to be euthanized
The euthanasia process took quite awhile
False killer whales don't look like killer whales at all
The teeth were removed to determine the age
Post-necropsy...yuck
