the old turtle and the sea

Numerous people have asked me since I got home, "So how many turtles did you count this summer?" The answer is one. You see, it's really hard to actually catch a sea turtle nesting because they only come up (generally) at night, and there's a lot of beach out there. It's a matter of being at the right place at the right time. Well, this summer, I was lucky enough to actually see one of these cool creatures nesting. She came up in the late afternoon, and one of our law enforcement rangers saw her and called us.

You can see the crawl she made coming up from the ocean
Mama turtle goes about her business as we watch
I'm the one on the left
Cool, huh?
Mama covers her eggs by flinging sand with her flippers
So basically, I lived the Discovery Channel this summer
After covering her eggs, mom heads back to sea
One of our law enforcement rangers, Steve, goes in for a closeup.
Almost there...
And away she goes.
