What About Violence and Abuse?
Nobody deserves to be abused. Violence is a crime.
TYPES OF ABUSE:
- PHYSICAL ABUSE - hitting, punching, pushing, biting, stabbing, or otherwise physically harming a person.
- SEXUAL ABUSE - rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, female genital mutilation (FGM), sexual slavery, and incest.
- VERBAL/EMOTIONAL ABUSE - battering, name-calling, belittling, blackmailing, etc.
WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I'M BEING ABUSED?
- GET TO A SAFE PLACE - Try to get yourself away from your abuser/attacker by going to a safe place. This can be a shelter, hospital, police station, a friend's house, or anywhere away from your abuser.
- SEEK HELP - You don't have to go through this alone. You deserve help. You can call our local Shelby County SafeHouse crisis line 24/7 at (205) 664-4357, or RAINN (Rape Abuse & Incest National Network) at 1-800-656-HOPE.
- REMEMBER, IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT - It is never your fault that you have been abused. Your abuser is at fault.
