News Flash: Snoop Dogg Gives Up Weed & Alcohol for Some Hot Porno Action (seriously)
According to Virgin MegaMagazine: Snoop Dogg, aged at 30, has told BET that he has given up smoking weed and drinking alcohol. "I'm 30 years old now. Three kids. A wife. A mom. Brothers. Artists. Family. Friends. They all need me. They depend on me," said Snoopy. But that quote won't wash away the fact that Snoop won High Times Magazine's 2002 highly coveted Stoner of the Year Award. Rest assured, if Snoop turns into just another nerd from the hood, I'm sure Dr. Dre will be there to help him toke it up-- he's always had his back. Apparently, Quincy Jones and Babyface are held accountable for his newfound lifestyle. But who are they kidding? We all know they smoke bud.

Oh, in other lifestyle changes, Snoop Dogg released a new series of videos and DVDs appropriately titled Girls Gone Wild Doggy Style earlier this month. But you already knew that, didn't you?

The Smashing Pumpkins Update
Who would have thought that Billy Corgan could really have kept such a low profile for this long? Rumor has it that his band, ZWAN (Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlain (Ex-Pumpkins Drummer), Matt Sweeney, David Pajo, and Paz?), have finished recording their first studio album and are looking for the right record company on which to release the CD. Word is that Ex-Pumpkins guitarist James Iha has a new song released. Here are the lyrics:

Never Ever
Never Ever
Sometimes Never
Never Ever
Never Ever
Never Ever
Sometimes Never
Never Ever
Never Ever

Never Ever
Never Ever
Sometimes Never
Never Ever
Never Ever
Never Ever
Sometimes Never
Never Ever
Never Ever

Never Ever

Yeah, the song's called Never Ever. As for D'arcy (Ex-Pumpkins Bassist), no one's heard anything since her drug bust in 2000. Remember the 1993 Siames Dream tour documentary video called Vieuphoria? Word is that it's to be released on DVD very soon. Details are coming if this is, in fact, true. This video had a soundtrack called Earphoria; word is that this will be re-released as well.

Weezer's Secret E.P.
For anyone who still loves and collects antything/everything that Weezer releases, there's a live E.P. entitled The Lion and the Witch EP being released tomorrow. Well, the covere's really nice. Tracklist is as follows:
1. Dope Nose
2. Island In The Sun
3. Falling For You
4. Death And Destruction
5. El Scorcho
6. Holiday

Only an elite ring of record stores will be releasing the CD; the list is posted at Weezer's Official Website. Some of these stores' internet sites are selling this CD. One of which is The Electric Fetus.

Gyða Quits Múm
Today is the last official day of Gyða's membership in the Icelandic group Múm. I had to do a little research (thanks abraço, Zé Luís) to figure out which one of the twins Gyða is, but alas, it is all crystal clear now. She is their cello player, and for those of you who haven't seen them live or any pictures of them, you must have seen Belle & Sebastian's Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant album cover, right? Anyway, she is the female on the right of that picture. Múm completes their tour in London today; their very last performance with Gyða will be on BBC Radio 1's Peel Session to be broadcasted on October 3rd.

You can read Gyðas' statement here.

article: When the Second Single Fail by Ken Napzok

Okay, Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is good-- great, even. But did anyone else get sick of all the album-of-the-year hype pompously proclaimed so early in the year? Sure, "Radio Cure" and "Reservations" are simply brilliant, but can we really say the annoying "I'm the Man Who Loves You" fits the album? This is not a Wilco backlash: It's just that the politics behind Yankee Hotel Foxtrot seemed to boost Wilco to unprecedented, and perhaps, unwarrented levels. Well, it's September now, and Beck has just released his latest and, perhaps, greatest album, Sea Change. And if my prophetic powers are as strong as my pecs, hopefully many critics and fans will erase their number one spot and at least wait until the year is finished. However, my pecs are pretty weak, so we'll see.

But with the lackluster review at Pitchfork, many p-fork devotees will discount Beck's Sea Change as a major label failure rather than an artistic triumph. Just remember, they gave Circulatory System a 9.5 out of 10 and Trail of Dead's Source Tags & Codes a 10 out of 10! Wow!

Bjork Update on Greatest Hits and Family Tree Releases, Video, DVD
Due to unforseen complications in the manufacturing process of the albums, the Greatest Hits CD and Family Tree set has a new release date of November 4th. Go to bjork.com for more information regarding tracklisting, etc.

Also, Bjork and director Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich, "It's Oh So Quiet," "Buddy Holly") shot the video for "It's in Our Hands" a few weeks ago. The video will premiere at bjork.com early next month. Those of you who can't wait can check out this picture collage of the video shoot here.

And finally, the Royal Opera House DVD has also been delayed so it could be released in Dolby 5.1 sound. Go here for more information on her Greatest Hits album, Family Tree set, and her new video.

Godspeed You Black Emperor! New Album and Side Project Details
It's hard to keep tabs on all the elusive members of Godspeed You Black Emperor!, but here is a short summary of recent and upcoming releases according to GYBE's webpage:

As previously reported (but worth rementioning), the bombastic Godspeed You Black Emperor! have completed a new album titled Yanqui U.X.O. and is set for release on November 4th in Europe and November 11th in North America.

Set Fire to Flames (various members of GYBE!, Fly Pan Am, Hanged Up) and Acid Mothers Temple are aiming to do a split release together, which will be released on the esoteric Alien8 Recordings "in the near future."

September 9th was the release date for Exregistreur, the follow-up to Exhuast's 2000 self-titled debut, which features ex-GYBE! member Aidan.

Et Sans, a collaboration between Roger Tellier-Craig (GYBE!, Fly Pan Am) and Alexandre St-Onge (Shalabi Effect, Undo) has released its debut album titled I'Autre.

Nada Surf Joins Barsuk Records
According to Basement Life: Nada Surf, the band who became popular from a song titled "Popular," has found a new home with the Seattle, Washington-based label, Barsuk Records (Death Cab for Cutie, The Long Winters, John Vanderslice, Metallica, Bill Murray).

After a struggle with Elektra Records, the band was forced to release their 2000 album, The Proximity Effect on their own label titled MarDev. Opting to find a middle ground between self-releasing and a major label, the band found Barsuk Records who will be releasing the band's third album in January of next year. The album is titled Let Go and was partially mixed by Death Cab's Chris Walla, which may explain the jump to Barsuk. Or not.

Gavin Rossdale Finds Some Bush to Call His Own No Doubt
Gavin Rossdale of rock outfit Bush (haha, that name still makes me laugh) has tied the knot with Gwen Stefani of No Doubt. Of course, one wedding in London is not enough, so they will make a trip to LA for their second wedding. And a few of us from the TinyMixtapes staff (kasey diaz, robot, and cowboy dan) will be there to write a glowing review. Has anyone else noticed that "Glycerine" is the same chord progression as Green Day's "When I Come Around"? Ahh, the 90s kicked ass.

The Beck: Sea Change
Follow the links at Beck.com to listen to his new album, Sea Change. They have been posting one song a week for quite some time now, and are currently at "Little One," the penultimate song. And if you're feeling guilty for listening to the album early, you're dumb. It's on their official website. Just make sure you buy this awesome, awesome album next Tuesday (September 24th).

New Dismemberment Plan Song
Go here for a direct link to a new Dismemberment Plan song called "Angry Angel." Listen as Travis does his best Ben Gibbard impression. I can't believe this is the same band that wrote "Bra." Now I realize Change wasn't so much a tangent from their punk-pop anthems as an indictation of a new style, for better or worse.

Shortlist Music Awards 2002
As incorrectly reported last week, this year's Shortlist Music Awards will not be held at the Knitting Factory like last year. Instead, the gala will be held at the Henry Fonda Theater, which is located on the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard, LA. We apologize for any convenience this may have caused, right Debbie?

Sigur Ros Tour Dates!!!!!!!
Holy shitballs, tourdates for Sigur Ros' upcoming North American tour have been announced! These four Icelandic young'ns have chosen to bestow their ethereal compositions in relatively small theaters, sure to harbor acoustically correct experiences. They are currently touring Europe in support of their forthcoming album, titled ( ).

As previously reported, ( ) is to be released on October 29th and is expected to be less slick than Agaetis Byrjun. Sigur-ros.co.uk has recently reported that the album is divided into two halves. The first half will contain "sweeter, quieter" sounding songs, while the latter half will feature somber, bombastic compositions. The two halves are to be divided by silence, continuing the minimal motif found in the artwork and title of the album.

You do not want to miss these guys live; so please, all you TinyMixtapes readers: MAKE AN EFFORT TO GO TO ONE OF THESE SHOWS!

Death Crab for Cutie: You Can Play These Songs with Chords
Taken from Barsuk.com, because, well, I'm lazy:

Release date: October 22, 2002
Pre-orders will be accepted beginning October 11

In 1997, before Death Cab for Cutie was a band, Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla made an 8-song cassette. Originally released by Bellingham's Elsinor Records, you can play these songs with chords is a remarkable document of what was to become DCFC. The Barsuk release compiles the original 8 songs, plus 10 tracks of unreleased early recordings, covers, and outtakes from 1997-2000 (taken from recording sessions for chords, something about airplanes, and we have the facts and we're voting yes).

Eighteen songs: president of what? / champagne from a paper cup / pictures in an exhibition / hindsight / that's incentive / amputations / two cars / line of best fit / this charming man / tv trays / new candles / tomorrow / flustered/hey tomcat / state street residential / wait / prove my hypotheses / song for kelly huckaby / army corps of architects

These may or may not be lyrics from the alternate version of "Champagne From A Paper Cup":
"I never would've dreamed in a million years I'd see, so many motherfuckin' people who feel like me/who share the same views and the same exact beliefs, it's like a fuckin' army marchin' in back of me/So many lives I touch, so much anger aimed in no particular direction, just sprays and sprays and straight through your radio waves it plays and plays, till it stays stuck in your head for days and days/who woulda thought, standing in this mirror bleachin' my hair, with some peroxide, reachin for a t-shirt to wear/that I would catapult to the forefront of rap like this? How could I predict my words would have an impact like this/I must've struck a chord, with somebody up in the office, cuz Congress keeps telling me I ain't causin' nuthin' but problems/and now they're sayin' I'm in trouble with the government, I'm lovin' it, I shoveled shit all my life/and now I'm dumping it on... "

Portishead's Beth Gibbons Goes Solo on that Ass
According to NME, Beth Gibbons, the mysterious queen of trip-hop, has taken a break from working with Portishead to concentrate on a solo album. The album is titled Out of Season and was recorded with ex-Talk Talk Paul Webb. Gibbons plans to debut songs at the London Shepards Bush Empire on October 16th. As for Portishead, it looks like we'll have to wait a little longer for the follow-up to 1997's eponymous album. Out of Season should be released within the next few months.

These may or may not be lyrics from a song off Out of Season:

"From the depths of the sea, back to the block / Snoop Doggy Dogg, Funky, yes but of the Doc / Went solo on that ass, but it's still the same / Long Beach is the spot where I served my cane / Follow me, follow me, follow me, follow me, but don't lose your grip / Nine-trizzay's the yizzear for me to fuck up shit / So I ain't holdin nuttin back / And motherfucker I got five on the twenty sack / It's like that and as a matter of fact [DRE: rat-tat-tat-tat] / Cuz I never hesitate to put a n*gga on his back / [DRE: Yeah, so peep out the manuscript You see that it's a must we drop gangsta shit] / What's my motherfuckin name?"

Shortlist Music Prize Nominees
It's that time of year again. The Shortlist Music Prize, the American version of the UK's Mercury Music Prize, has just announced the nominees for this year's gala, many of which are 2001 releases. Anyway, the nominees are...

Aphex Twin - Drukqs
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Bjork - Vespertine
Cee-Lo - Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections
DJ Shadow - The Private Press
The Doves - The Last Broadcast
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The Hives - Veni Vidi Vicious
N.E.R.D. - In Search of...
Zero 7 - Simple Things

The event will be held at the usual Knitting Factory in Los Angeles, CA on October 29th. Sigur Ros won for Agaetis Byrjun last year. This year, members of The Strokes, Beck, and Mos Def will be on the judging panel. I wonder if The Strokes will vote for The Vines-- uh, I mean The Hives.

Beck and The Flaming Lips First Leg
As TinyMixtapes previously reported, the Oklahoma weirdos of the Flaming Lips will be touring with Beck Hansen under the moniker, "Beck." The Flaming Lips will not only act as the opening band for each show, but will also join Beck for a sure-to-be outlandish renditions of the stripped-down acoustic songs on his forthcoming album, Sea Change.

Well, the dates for the first leg of this curious collaboration has just been announced. The Lips ended its Unlimited Sunshine Tour with Cake, De La Soul, and Modest Mouse in Minneapolis, MN (where the 6-story TinyMixtapes complex is located) late last month, and will begin the tour with Beck in the same city. Cool, huh? Though, I'm a little worried for Beck and The Lips because another band has announced a tour in October, also (see the next news bit).

Sea Change comes out Sept 24th, I think. Go to Beck's Official Website for details on pre-ordering tickets. Here are the dates:

10.17.02 Minneapolis, MN Orpheum Theater
10.18.02 Chicago, IL Chicago Theater
10.20.02 Toronto, CAN Massy Hall
10.21.02 Detroit, MI Detroit Opera House
10.22.02 Indianapolis, IN Murat Center
10.24.02 Columbus, OH Mershon Auditorium
10.25.02 Cleveland, OH The Palace Theater
10.26.02 Syracuse, NY Landmark Theater
10.28.02 Boston, MA Orpheum
10.30.02 New York City, NY Beacon Theater
10.31.02 New York City, NY Beacon Theater

****note: If you are on the Flaming Lips mailing list, the dates they provided are wrong, as it is physically impossible to tour in a month that has already passed. But who knows? Flaming Lips are very capable beings.

The Microphones New Album: Mt. Eerie
We here at TinyMixtapes are very proud to announce details of yet another release by the one and only Microphones (aka Phil Elvrum). After having just released Little Bird Flies into a Big Black Cloud (*glowing* review pending...) on St.Ives Records (which is only limited to 400 copies), Song Islands (compilation album) on K Records, and the book, "What Wonder?," Elvrum has just completed work on the proper follow-up to the amazing Glow Pt. 2, released in 2001.

As you might have guessed, the new album, titled Mt. Eerie, will be released on K Records. Inspired by the bombastic choirs on Bjork's Vespertine, Elvrum employed a wealth of musicians to help create a similar ambience. The album contains only five songs, all which are supposedly a make up of smaller songs within.

With growing connections between his last several albums, Mt. Eerie will begin with the same amplified heartbeat found on the closing minutes of The Glow pt. 2. The forthcoming album is set for an early January release. Also, two seven-inches should be out shortly, and Elvrum just received a grant to craft a photography book.

Here's the tracklisting, and yes, there are two songs with the same title:

1. The Sun
2. Solar System
3. The Universe
4. Mount Eerie
5. The Universe

Much like the conspiracy theories surrounding 9-11, NME has made it their duty to find out the truth behind Blur, their guitarist Graham Coxon, their producer Fatboy Slim, and their new album. Over the past couple weeks, there has been confusion as to whether Coxon is even in the band anymore, as he has not been in the studio recording with the rest of the band. Well, in typical NME fashion, their journalists would just not let any dust settle before reporting their findings. So, if you're interested, here is a link to the most up-to-date findings.

Massive Attack Release Two Albums
Robert "3-D" Del Naja is hard at work on the follow-up to 1998's acclaimed Mezzanine. The new album is currently untitled, and-- according to Massive Attack's website-- has more "depth" than Mezzanine. The album features samples from their own material, rather than new wave samples. "3-D" is currently in London working on the final mix.

And as reported on their official website, Massive Attack plan to release another album within a year after the forthcoming album. This album will be "less precious" and "more disposable." Hmmm, I don't think that's the best marketing strategy.

In addition to the two new albums, Massive Attack plan to tour next year.

Bjork Stole Equipment from a London home!
I mean, a thief/burglar/robber stole equipment from Bjork's London home. According to NME, while she was sleeping in her flat in Maida Vale, London (August 30th), someone broke in and stole her recording equipment. Who would have the guts to steal from Bjork? Don't they remember what happened to that camera guy who was filming her newborn?

Speaking of newborns, two people in the department where I work had babies recently. Bjork will also by the end of the year.

Moby vs. Eminem
If you're interested in two nearly-bald guys battling out, check out this hilarious article at CDNOW. Is it just me, or do these two guys kinda look the same? Maybe Eminem is battling Moby in a quest to battle his own inner demons. Sniff Sniff.

Failure's Ken Andrews Starts New Band
As reported by Josh:
Ken Andrews, the man behind the now defunct band Failure, which in my opinion was one of the greatest bands of the 90's, and producer of various bands, such as Tenacious D, has formed a new band and already recorded an album. The name of the band is Year of the Rabbit, and can be found @ yearoftherabbit.net and Ken's site can be found @ kenandrews.com. Right now they only seem to be doing shows in the LA area. But I'm sure they'll make the rounds once the album gets released. They also have an MP3 available for download. In between Failure and Year of the Rabbit, Ken did a solo project called ON, and he claims that he will continue this, although his main efforts will go toward the new band.
