The Gladys Gig History

Yoyogi Park Outdoor Stage 7/18/98 UK Sound event. Our first band practice was 6 days prior to this show. We played 4 songs

Elephant bar, Shibuya 8/6/98 Appeared with Orangey

What's Happening, Shinjuku 8/21/98 A right dump

The Fiddler 8/29/98 with Orangey. Apparently, we "really rocked", according to one observer.

The Fiddler 9/5/98 with Agent Finley and Sway

Yoyogi Park Outdoor Stage 9/19/98 Tokyo City Asian Festival '98

The Fiddler 10/3/98 Appeared with Shaft

Yoyogi Park Outdoor Stage 10/17/98 3 months old and already outdoor venue veterans! UK Sound do

The Fiddler 10/31/98 The infamous "4 new ones at the start" gig. What balls! One member of the audience said he'd like to put a bottle in bassist Dave's face. Temper! Temper!

The Fiddler 11/7/98 This was a pretty crap show according to my notes

The Elephant Bar 11/19/98 R.I.P Elephant Bar. Appeared with Orangey

The Fiddler 11/20/98 We all got pissed in Shibuya before this gig. We played crap but had a good time

Club Code, Shinjuku 11/22/98 UK Sound club event

The Fiddler 12/11/98 Mark and Dave W have onstage argument. It could've got nasty. But it didn't

Fiesta, Roppongi 12/22/98 Global Vision CD release party. With Orangey and Dr. Jan

The Fiddler 12/31/98 With Shaft, I seem to recall, who had the honour of singing in the new year

The Fiddler 1/2/99 This gig was a miserable start to the year. You lot had better things to do over the holidays, eh? Well, we've got long memories you know

What the Dickens 2/4/99 7 months after we started and they finally let us play the Dickens

What the Dickens 3/4/99 A month later and they let us do it again

The Fiddler 3/6/99 I'm beginning to regret starting this list now

Shelter, Shimokitazawa 3/10/00 with Yossey & Chips, Minx and the now-famous Bump of Chicken

The Black Sheep, Ikebukuro 3/13/99 Mark and Dave W argue over songs again

the Fiddler 3/20/99 with Sway

Club Code, Shinjuku 3/22/99 6 gigs in a month! We were practically on tour!! The infamous "stolen drumstool" gig. Dave R played in a chair

The Fiddler 4/3/99 I'll tell yer what, I'm getting bloody fast at making these tables

Loft, Shinjuku 4/28/99 There was nobody there! Still, we got a good recording

What the Dickens 4/30/99 Nothing noteworthy about this one

The Fiddler 5/1/99 An experimental set, featuring some crap we'd never dare do again

The Fiddler 5/2/99 Better than the previous night

Tokyo Big Sight 5/15/99 We appeared as part of the Tokyo Design Festa Vol. 9

Club Pangaea, Shinjuku 5/22/99 The only venue we've ever played that I still can't pronounce

The Fiddler 6/11/99 A band called Pow-Wow opened for us. We met them at the Design Festa

The Black Sheep 6/19/99 "You're THIS close", said one observer. "Close to what?", replied a sarcy member of the band

Milk, Ebisu 6/24/99 They still owe us the money they promised us for this one

Heaven's Door 7/2/99 This was to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of some local bar. Someone was playing with a new 5-string bass. And didn't practice enough beforehand. And made a lot of mistakes. On video

Shelter, Shimokitazawa 7/11/99 with Yossey & Chips, Sway and the Kids. A mistake-free show

Loft 7/19/99 Not strictly a Gladys gig; actually MR, DW and BC appearing as DJ Your Wife. The show featured the electronic music of MR & DW.

The Fiddler 7/23/99 A rare event - we repeated some songs

The Black Sheep 7/24/99 MR and BC performed several songs acoustically while waiting for DR to arrive. He had a cold. Bless him

Tomin Hiroba, Shinjuku 7/25/99 Oh, the joy of playing live while looking at the skyscrapers. UK Sound event

What the Dickens 7/29/99 We played crap, according to my notes

Loft 8/6/99 2 words kept going round my head after this miserable show: "why", and "bother"

The Fiddler 8/13/99 Brian broke strings on four occasions tonight

The Black Sheep 8/21/99 Thanks to all who came that night

What the Dickens 9/10/99 Ran into an old mate. Nice surprise that

The Black Sheep 9/25/99 Not quite as big a crowd as last time here. I wonder if that's why they've never asked us back since

The Fiddler 10/16/99 We tried a couple of electronic tracks. The response was....confused

What the Dickens 10/29/99 Brian appeared with new guitar......................... he still broke a string

The Fiddler 11/19/99 Not much you can say after 19 gigs at the same place

Hibiya Park 11/27/99 Our 50th was as part of the Tokyo City Asian Festival '99

Stella, Nakameguro 12/11/99 Another one from which we're still owed money

What the Dickens 12/17/99 I got so drunk I simply forgot how to play most of the songs in the 3rd set

? Elvis died on this date. I hear it was a dump that killed him

The Fiddler 1/21/00 We played exactly the same set as we did on Christmas eve

What the Dickens 3/11/00 We were interviewed by Sky Perfect TV before the show and 2 guys from a little label called Explosion Records came to see us. This gig was where the live versions of HORIZON, STELLA CHINESE and PERSONAL APPEARANCE, which subsequently appeared on the Extream CD, were recorded. Julian brought along all his little toys

The Fiddler 3/19/00 with Velocity Boy. By 'eck, we were good tonight

Barge Inn 4/28/00 This was like playing at the bottom of a well! Most of the people in the audience were stood about 12 feet above us.

The Fiddler 5/19/00 My mate Jez was in the audience. All the way from London just to see the Gladys. Yawright Jez? How's the missus?

Design Festa 5/20/00 "A very well played set with good monitoring" is all I've got on this one. So there yer go.

What The Dickens 6/2/00 Ooooh yeah! The heckler. There wer this guy, right, an' azzy wer walkin past t' stage, he med a "wankers" gesture. So Mark, right, wotti did, right, he started tekkin t' piss outter this guy while he wer singin! It werrer right laff.

Y2K, Roppongi 6/22/00 No hecklers tonight, just a bloody good crowd. We all adder lotter fun. Annif yer cartav fun then why bother, that's what I always say.

The Fiddler 7/1/00 Ooh, eh? EH? This werrer goodun. And how's about this for an insulting complement: "That song you just did was GREAT! Is it a cover?" (Thanks to Remko for pointing out that list had gotten out of date. It's nice to know someone has read it.)

Y2K 7/8/00 You. Yes, you! We know who you are, where you live, and where you buy those grey Y-fronts. We're coming to get you. And then you'll get your come-uppence for sneaking backstage and nicking Brian's MD recorder, you sticky-fingered little tea-leaf, you. Apart from that incident, this was a great show. Aaah! And the cocked-up encore. DaveW was too professional to stand around on stage arguing over what song to do. He wasn't such a pro that he got off stage before packing his things up, however. Still, this CD release event must have been successful - we shifted 800 CDs. Or was it 8?

The final shows in Tokyo and first shows in London are coming...just trying to think of something clever...
