A Switchblade Affair

If you made it this far, here's a useful list of multimedia software we either currently use or highly support because it helps artists and musicians make statements without putting a huge dent in our pockets.  In the new digital age, artists can produce quality work that only the very wealthy could attempt just 15 years ago.  There are no limits now to our creativity, so there's no excuse for wasting our time.  Remember to support the developers.  Quit work, make art.

Audio Recording Hardware:

Alesis MultiMix 16 Firewire Interface
An all-around badass mixer that can stream 18 channels of 48khz/24-bit audio to your computer through a firewire card. Currently selling for under $400 (US).  Good-enough preamps, 8 XLR inputs and 8-1/4" stereo inputs that can be recorded separately.  Comes bundled with Cubase, which unfortunately cripples inputs to only 8 channels, but with some hacking to the program, all inputs can be recongnized for recording (you'll have to figure this out on your own).  Only drawbacks are that the audio is recorded post-fader (so no moving the faders during a live show!) and the music streaming back from the computer has no separate volume control, but for the price you absolutely cannot go wrong.

M-Audio Delta 44 PCI Interface
4-in, 4-out PCI recording interface delivers 98khz/24-bit audio to your computer.  Accepts only 1/4" inputs unfortunately, so you have to have a separate mixer in most instances.  Compatible with M-Audio powered Pro Tools, if that's your bag.  Sells for around $150 (US).

Audio Recording/Multitracking software:

 Reaper Multitracking Software (shareware)

Probably the best, most full-featured multitracking software available without limitations.  Supports multiple inputs, unlimited tracks and sends, automation envelopes and VST effects and instruments.  Comparable to Cubase without the huge price tag.  Unregistered version has a nag screen on startup, but other than that it's uncrippled.  Registration to remove the nag screen is $50.

Wavosaur Audio Editor (freeware?)
Wavosaur is a free sound editor, audio editor, wav editor software for editing, processing and recording sounds, wav and mp3 files.  Includes too many features to list, but its abilities are comprehensive and features are comparable to the "Edit" view in Cool Edit Pro (now Adobe Audition).  Includes the ability to use VST plugins for advanced audio editing.

VST Plugins and Effects

Gersic.com (web site)

A huge database of free plugins and effects, including amps, compressors, distortions, delays, choruses, reverbs, filters, EQs and other effects.  This is an invaluable resource for getting your tracks to sound as pro as you can handle, as long as you find the right plugins and use them correctly.

KVR Plugins (web site)

Another free plugin database.
