Civilian Ships

Shuttle:The shuttlecraft is a ship that every pilot will end up finding themselves in at one point or another. Many people get out of it right away, but I stay in mine for a long time. Trade with it but nothing else or you will be sorry. I would give it give it 2 Fuel Tanks and an Afterburner.

Scoutship: This is a wise choice to upgrade to after the Shuttle. It has good speed, great range and adequete weapons space. Either exploring the galaxy or doing cargo missions are the best choice. Again fighting would not be a good choice for the Scoutship. I would give it 4 Lasers, an Afterburner and a Cargo Pod. The lasers are useful if you end up getting caught in a battle.

Defender: The Defender is the weakest fighter in the game. No use flying one, because a Scoutship can be made more battle-ready than the Defender. But if you end up getting in one give it a layer of Armaplast armor. Then cross your fingers.
Courier:The Courier is a great ship for the time of game you will be getting it. Some players get this after the Shuttle, myself included. It has good range, good cargo space and defense, although it's speed could use improvement. It is great for cargo missions and if needed, commodity trading is an option. I would give it an Afterburner, some armor, and a Cargo pod. Then decide between 2 Fuel Tanks or 2 Lasers.
Light Freighter: The Light Freighter has one use-trading commodities.Trying anything else is simply stupid. All you need to outfit it with is an Afterburner, a Cargo Pod and speed upgrades if you have the money. The best trading ship there is except the Bulk Freighter which isn't purchasable.
Clipper: The Clipper is very adaptable like it's description says. I recommend you choose to turn it to a fighter or a courier vessel, but having it be average at both isn't a good idea. A good choice to get before the 1 million mark, but the Argosy is also a good choice too. If you want a courier vessel give it a Cargo Pod, an Afterburner, 2 Fuel Tanks and some Lasers for defense. For a fighter give it 2 Mass Expansions, 4 Proton Cannons, an Afterburner and some more Javelins+Missles.
Argosy: The Argosy is the best choice to get before 1 million credits in my opinion. It has good cargo and weapons space plus reasonable defenses. It is good for trading with it's large cargo bay. But is very adatble and can be turned into a rather average warship. To turn it into a warship i would give it lots of Mass Expansions, 2 Proton Turrets, 3 Proton Cannons, Javilin Rockets, some armor and Missles. Speed upgrades are a must.
Lightning: The Lightning is one of the best fighters in the game. It has good speed, average weapons space but a poor cargo bay. I would get if you want a fighter as your ship but it will it sets you right back below the 1 million credits mark likely. If you get one give it 4 Proton Cannons, 2 Fuel Tanks, lots more missles and Javilins. Ditch the Rocket Launcher-all it does is take up space. On the other hand it is usefull for doing strafing runs.
Rapier: The Rapier does great damage against larger capitol ships. It isn't very usefull in fighting other fighters. It needs speed upgrades as it is a slow fighter. For upgrades i woulg sell the Rocket Launcher+Proton Cannons and buy 4 Lasers, Javilin Rockets, 2 fuel tanks and more torpedoes. If you want a Cargo Pod might not be a bad idea if you get low on money. A good choise to get after the 1 million mark, but I still like the Corvette more.
Bulk Freighter: A great ship for trading and not much else.I would buy a Proton Turret, A Hawk Fighter Bay and Missles. The 3 engine upgrades are a must.
Corvette:The Corvette is a good ship for a good price. It has good weapons and cargo space, sheilds, armor and speed. It is best used as a Warship as that is what it is designed for. It is a ship that can take out Kestrels if used correctly. I would give it 2 Proton Turrets, 5 Proton Cannons, 2 Fuel Tanks, and more Missles and Javelins. Selling the Rocket Launcher is a good idea. Mass expansions are also usefull.
Kestrel:The Kestrel is a great ship all-around. It has great speed, space and average defenses. It's two Lightnings can be a major asset in battle. Using it as anything but a warship is not recommended. I would buy 1 more Proton Turret, 4 Lasers, 2 Javilin Pods+Rockets, and use the rest of the space to max out on Missles or Torps. Get Mass Expansions but leave enough cargo room to do missions. 20 or 30 tons is recommended.
