Standing watching the stars in the night sky glitter and twinkle, she sang a sweet song, a lullaby to ease the pain she was feeling.

Chapter One

The memory of years gone by burned painfully in her heart as she closed the window and climbed onto her bed, snuggling down under the blankets. Lying starying at the ceiling, her mind wandered as the ever-present insominia kicked in once again. Had she done something bad in a previous life? Done something so bad that the past 5 years had been payback?
If there was such a thing as Karma, then she had been handed one hell of a slice of it. Turning on her side, she sighed, closed her eyes and willed herself to sleep. It was no use, sleep evaded her again, just as it had for so many years, such a long time. Sitting up she reached for the TV remote and started flicking aimlessly through the numerous channels. After what seemed like forever she came across a film, one she had seen more than she could count. She felt the breath catch in her throat as the young gorgeous actor put his character through his tortureous paces. Reaching out she drew a pillow to her, hugging it close. A lone tear rolled down her cheek as the film credits crept up the screen.
"Stop being silly, Tammy!" she muttered, angrilly throwing the pillow at the TV, hitting the 'off' button. "Like he would be interested in me anyway."
Getting up and glancing at the clock on the bedside table she saw it was only 2am. Plodding downstairs to the empty kitchen, she poured a glass of milk and sat down at the table, thoughts drifting absently through her mind. Weekends were always lonely, but today was going to be different. She had arranged to meet her sister, and her boyfriend, for lunch. Now she was regretting agreeing to it at all, playing gooseberry was not what she was in the mood for.
Her love for her sister was deep and she meant the world to her. All that was left in the world for her now was her little sister, Rinuriel. No one stuck around for long. Once they knew they truth they left, all of them. Life had been one disaster after another. Growing up with a mother who couldn't have cared if she lived or died, not knowing her father, eventually being taken into care for her own safety. Knowing she had a sister but unable to find her, until 4 years ago when their paths had crossed. The feeling of emptiness had left her that first time they met; realising immediately, here was someone who was a part of her, she was no longer alone.

Except for the last two months she had not been alone. Then James left, not a word, just left. No reasons, no explanations. Only when she saw him in London, shortly after, did the reason become very apparent. The girl with him was beautiful, tall and slim. Her hair was a lovely rich hazlenut, a Doctor apparently, and they were engaged. Everything she wasn't. James had never seen a website as a 'proper' job. She couldn't blame him though, why have silver when you could have gold?
Finishing her milk, she rinsed the glass and headed back to the bedroom. Sitting on the edge of the bed, forcing her reflections to smile back at her from the mirror. She thought ahead to lunchtime, when she would be seeing Rin for the first time in six months, and Tai. Thinking of Tai caused a smile to spread across her face. Rin had been lucky landing him. Not just anyone would do for Rin. She had known what she wanted from the moment she first bumped into him, literally, and she got it.
"7am, breakfast time" she muttered, suddenly realising how hungry she was. She hadn't eaten all yesterday, it had been one hell of a day at work. Work being her office at home that hadn't mattered much, but it had still been a day for bad news. The website was losing money, people were losing interest; the fomula which had been such a big hit to start was failing. She was also struggling to come up with ideas to gain new interest. "Damn, maybe it's time I quit and tried something new."
Walking back to the kitchen she pulled the chocolate flakes from the back of the sparse cupboard and poured a large bowl full, adding milk as an afterthought. Leaving them to go soggy she collected the mail from the front mat. Sitting back at the table with her breakfast she slowly flicked through the mail.
"Bill...bill...bill" she mumbled between mouthfuls of cereal, tossing each letter into the post tray on the counter. "I'll deal with you later." Her eyes fell to the postcard she was holding, it was from Christine, who was holidaying in Barbados. If ever there was a fair-weather friend, then she was it. Washing up her plate she put on the kettle. As she made herself a mug of tea, she nearly dropped it as the phone rang. "Bloody hell!" she muttered, making a dive across the hall to the phone.
