This brilliant show was the brain-child of Annette Marie (of the band Shut Up Marie). With only a month of planning, this gig went off big. She conjured up several bands with chicks in ‘em. (Why didn't we think of that?)
"Everyone likes bands with chicks in ‘em, right?", says Annette Marie, "But it's just the opposite of Lilith Fair."
We had so much fun right from the outset.
All girl bands. (or bands with chicks in ‘em). What a genius formula. Men, does it get better than that? Yes. With a hottie-packed house and J.D. specials; the proprietor, Mike Dolbow, was very pleased and now looks forward to adding more publicity to another, even bigger show in the spring.
Here's a quick run down of the "Sexy and Loud" show as I saw it:
Emceed by L.A. comedy fave Lynn Epstein, this show from start to finish was packed with fun and games (literally)! Lynn did comedy bits and GRRL ROCK Trivia for prizes in between sets, and she made us laugh quite a bit!
First band up: Mas Macho with Brittney Stinner Here's a band that started out the show right! Their youthful energy kicked everything right into gear, taking everyone by surprise with some tantalizing Latin beats thrown in here and there for extra spice! Brittney reminds me of a young Gwen Stefani, backed by a band taking No Doubt's own musical style to the next level. And don't let these high-schoolers fool you, they are talented beyond their years! Glad I was treated to such a refreshing punch in the face!!
Random Logic with Calee Schroeder The bad news here is that I'm sorry, but I took a bunch of snaps before I realized there was no film in the camera. Seriously. Oops. What I can remember, however, is that they sounded kind of like The Cramps musically, but with Cranberries-esque vocals! Calee Schroeder's melodic, sexy voice mixed in with her sultry and slinky moves made for the perfect showcase! She got me going, that's for sure. Lucky I didn't melt down into a puddle of gooey flesh!
Magnuson with Kyrsten Hopkins This band was fun to watch because they meshed so well. Good melodies. Real music. And of course, Kyrsten was delectable eye candy too. It's tough to meet girls that are pretty AND cool. She has nice guitar/stage antics and she can even pound those strings. Overall, a very good performance by all. I was not disappointed. Hell, as I recall, we even DEMANDED an encore. Oh yeah- Got hair?
Michelle McAffe of Venus Down I was simply awestruck at this one, fellas. Chick came up on the stage, solo, and flat out stole my heart. Whipped out 2 or three songs and I actually swelled - with pride. All guts, all glory. OMG, you guys, words do not do this woman justice. So I'll break it down into terms the male readers can understand: Nice rack AND she shreds the guitar. Not only that, she has had a number 1 hit in Canada with Nancy Denault called "West Of Everything". When I saw her on stage, I thanked god that I was born a man to appreciate such fine fem. We can't wait to see her again with the rest of her crew.
The Abuse with Paulette M. Valenzuela OK readers, get ready. This band fu**ing rocks. Everyone was in tune. They kept their funky rhythm. They became their instruments. Truly an enjoyable sight to behold. Paulette absolutely roared on that little stage. No end to her energy. She was perplexing and kind of scary. Just enough to make her intriguing. The huge stage presence, super-loud sustained voice and garish tattoos were a complete contrast to the sweet little cupcake she was after their set. They gave me a CD and the sound quality is awesome. I've been listening to it for two days straight now. This band was ATTITUDE with aftertaste. Do yourself a favor, book this bitch. www.theabuse.com
Shut Up Marie with Annette Marie This band wasted no time hitting the stage and it was clear from the start that Annette was loud and in charge. She captivated the audience with concise and audible lyrics and she personally mesmerized me with her vigorous performance. I almost felt like she was singing the songs just for me. She must have been a gymnast or something when she was younger because her high-kicks knocked some dust off the ceiling. (I swear I saw it.) Everyone was caught up during their set and I noticed that she was the only one, that night, able to fill the dance floor with people actually dancing. She has the ability to rev it up and tone it down which results in a groovy musical ride. (Can I still use 'groovy'?) Her live performance definitely delivers more than her CD would lead you to believe. She's all heart. Oh yeah, nice butt too!
Annette, you put on a helluva show. You masterminded this whole thing with ease. Thank you for coming to our town to play. Admittedly, I was there to assess and spotlight the chicks in your show, and I was pleased to note that there was one thing resonant: They all had brains. Every one of these talented girls that you hand picked had direction and verve and a drive to succeed. I guess that's why God didn't give them balls.
