Summary Many companies have tried to make their processors fit into a wide range of devices with the end result being some type of specialty chip tailored for a single task. Sony is now spending billions to fulfill its promise of a cell chip architecture with numerous capabilities and unlimited possibilities, quite possibility the third generation of intelligent systems. The cell architecture should excell at graphics and multimedia applications, and will also be implemented into cellpohnes, PDAs, set-up boxes, game consoles, and personal computers. The first prototype of this technology, the Blue Gene/L, is targeted for completion sometime in 2005 and will be dedicated to problem-solving the science of protien synthesis as a means to cure disease.
