Issue One
For the past year I’ve found myself becoming increasingly more opinionated which more than likely can be attributed to my broader range of music, friends and of course literature. Yet the extent of me voicing those opinions has been through my clothes, bumper stickers, and a website that people who more or less already know my opinions occasionally read. That’s cheap. So I decided I was REALLY going to speak to the masses!
It almost seems like cheating to write my opinion down and present it in this manner rather than suffer through attempting to speak to people one on one. Not that I mind speaking about that which I’m passionate, but I constantly find myself walking away from a conversation (argument, discussion, call it what you will) and half an hour later smacking myself in the head after thinking of something I should’ve mentioned or a valid retort that would’ve strengthened my case. No such worries with this method.
Somewhere between reading Cincinnati “underground” zines and the Utne Reader, I became somewhat jealous of such an outlet. I’ve always been of the opinion that rather than complain about the way things are, one should either attempt to change them or accept them. If at all possible I tend to opt for option #1. Not only am I going to speak my opinionated mind, but I am going to provide a source for others to do the same. (Essentially making myself feel more secure that I’m not alone in my effort to be heard.) Thus the birth of this beautiful creation.
The contents of this issue are from a broad range of contributors from all over the United States and even Canada. Perhaps in the future I’ll use a website for those who want to post on the internet if there is enough interest. I’d then be able to include longer prose writings and color graphics. (The site www.angelfire.com/indie/read is under construction for this purpose.)
There are so many topics to address ranging from organic foods to Indie rock that my hopes are some artistic, bored, inspired people will come forward to contribute. The preliminary months should prove interesting and I’m anxious to see what develops. Keep thinking and read on.
