Muggle Studies: Meteorology Lesson Two

"Class, Today we're going to be experiencing the world of hurricanes and maybe while we're experiencing if we're lucky we might have a chance to also see a tornado and can learn about that as well.Leave your things in the class room, they'll be fine, come up here circling around me and we'll go. Be prepared!"

Mary-Kate smiled toward them all excitedly as they gathered around her. Once ready, Mary-Kate muttered a spell she learned in Africa while traveling through and everyone disappeared only to all reappear within the eye of a swirling vortex miles and miles over the ocean.

"look above you, nothing but blue skies, and down below you the lightning flashing and thunder rumbling. beautiful sight eh? this is a tropical cyclone or better known as a hurricane. you are in the eye of the storm. a tropical cyclone is a storm system with a closed circulation around a center of low pressure, fueled by the heat released when moist air rises and condenses. The name underscores their origin in the tropics and their cyclonic nature. They are distinguished from other cyclonic storms such as nor'easters and polar lows by the heat mechanism that fuels them, which makes them "warm core" storm systems. Now, depending on their strength and location, a tropical cyclone can be called a tropical depression, tropical storm, hurricane, or typhoon among other names. Tropical cyclones can produce extremely high winds, tornadoes, torrential rain (leading to mudslides and flash floods), and drive storm surge onto coastal areas."

About that time something happened the hurricane hit landfall.

"Students this is exciting, we're landfalling. Officially, "landfall" is when a storm's center (the center of the eye, not its edge) reaches land. Naturally, storm conditions may be experienced on the coast and inland well before landfall. In fact, for a storm moving inland, the landfall area experiences half the storm before the actual landfall."

Now that they were on land, Mary-Kate flicked her wand and they all flew out of the hurricane (protected by magic) and landed on the ground. right when a tornado spun off the actual hurricane

"you're all safe, isnt she beautiful?!?! That my students is a tornado up close and personal. A tornado is a violently deceptive spinning column of air in contact with both a cumiliform cloud base and the surface of the earth. A tornado is typically shaped like a funnel with the narrow end on the ground. The word "tornado" comes from the Spanish word for "turned", which in turn comes from the Latin word torqueo, meaning "to twist." The most intense tornadoes can develop multiple vortices, all pinwheeling around the same axis. Tornado funnels can range in width from a few feet to as much as one mile across. No two tornadoes look exactly alike, nor have any two tornadoes behaved in exactly the same way."

As the tornado came closer, Mary-Kate muttered the spell and they all were back in the classroom safe.

"wow, what a rush! alright class for class assignment before time is up, write about your feelings on what you just experienced. two paragraphs on it all."

15minutes later

"turn it in, class is dismissed, oh and i'd bringa winter cloak with you for next class"
