Muggle Studies: Meteorology Lesson One

Mary-Kate paced back and forth in her classroom in the castle. She was very nervous since it was her first lesson.
:: I hope I do well ::
she thought to herself while she waited for the students to arrive.
:: I want to spark interest in them, not bore them ::
there were footsteps that came toward Mary-Kate though. She looked up and noticed the students had arrived.

"Welcome to Meteorology, I'm Professor Mary-Kate Carrigan and I will be teaching you Meteorology for the term. Who here can tell me exactly what Meteorology is?"
Mary-Kate waited and looked in at her students, not a single one of them raised their hand.
"Very well I will tell you."Mary-Kate smiled.

"Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere, weather processes and forecasting. Meteorological phenomena are watchable weather events which are explained by the study. The events are combined together by variables that are in the Earth's atmosphere. They are temperature, pressure, water vapor and the interactions of each of these variables and how they are changed. The majority of Earth's weather though is located in the Troposphere."

By now Mary-Kate was walking around inbetween the students while speaking making sure that there were actually a few students who were paying a lot of attention. She continued while she took out her wand.
"Now, before moving on, the term "Atmosphere" strictly means the layers of gases surrounding the planet. The Earth is made up of 78% Nitrogen, and 21% Oxygen. The atmosphere protects us on Earth by absorbing solar radiation and reducing temperatures. There is no "cut-off" of the atmosphere though. It just fades away. Although, there is a boundary line where effects become noticeable which is called the 'Karman Line'."

Mary-Kate waved her wand and a mass blue orb appeared in front of the class, it grew in size and soon was noticeable there were many different layers.
"The atmosphere is filled with layers which contribute. Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, and the highest layer being the Exosphere. Now within each of these "spheres" or layers there is a space connecting them. They are called Tropopause, Stratopause, Mesopause, thermopause and ending at exobase where the karman line is placed at."
She pointed at the different layers in their correct order and once finished speaking the blue orb faded away.

"Those Variables I spoke about are as follows: Temperature, Pressure, and water vapor."
Mary-Kate was walking back and forth through the students now with her hands behind her back, while continuing..

"With that said, onto the bigger things!" Mary-Kate said with a twinkle in her eye
"Weather is an all encompassing term used to describe all and varied phenomena that can occur in the atmosphere of a planet. The term is normally taken to mean the activity of these phenomena over short periods of time, usually no more than a few days in length. On Earth, regularly occurring weather phenomena include such things as wind, cloud, rain, snow, fog, and dust storms. Less common events include natural disasters such as tornados, hurricanes and ice storms. And that is what you will be learning about."

Mary-Kate stopped back up in front of the class and leaned on her desk, noticing the time was nearly up for the class.
"Alright, I know I mainly talked today, however I promise we will have more interaction in the up and coming lessons. Therefore, everyone take out your writing supplies and I would like for your to look to the board to your right and copy the class work down and turn it in before you leave this class. It's very simple work."

Mary-Kate waited for the students to finish the assignment and gathered the parchments while they were finishing up.
"Before you leave, make sure you bring your water proof ponchos for the next class! Class is dismissed. Mary-Kate smiled as she watched her students leave.
