1. Billy Wagner (7/25/71) was drafted by the Houston Astros in the first round of the 1993 amateur draft. Throwing a 100 MPH fastball, the Phillies traded Brandon Duckworth, Taylor Buchholz, and Ezequiel Astacio for Wagner before the 2004 season. Wagner performed as expected when he wasn't injured. 2. Sean Walsh (11/15/79) was the Phllies' 47th round draft pick in the 2001 amateur draft out of North Carolina State. Although a little old for his league, Walsh nonetheless had a fine season and well outperformed what you'd expect from an end-of-the-draft pick up. Able to play third, fist, outfield, and once even experimented as a catcher, (and smart basestealer to boot), Walsh certainly earned a promotion to Clearwater for 2003, and is the sort of player who you definitely route for to succeed. 3. Ryan Wardinsky (11/28/79) was the Phillies' 30th round pick in the 2002 amateur draft out of Texas A&M. Essentially a space filler in the lower leagues, Wardinsky began poorly at GCL, was promoted to Batavia, played better, and was therefore demoted back to GCL -- a clear sign of a player placed based on the needs of the organization rather than the needs of the player's development. He spent 2003 in Clearwater, where he looked about as far over his head as one would expect.(updated 1/5/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  4. Eric Weaver (8/4/73) was obtained from the Dodgers before the 2002 season for future consideration. He was originally signed by the Dodgers as a non-drafted free agent in 1991, and was played in the interim for Dodger, Mariner, Anaheim, San Diego, and White Sox systems, including several major league games in 1998-2000 for the Dodgers, Mariners, and Angels. He was released in May, 2003 after only a handful of games played. (updated 2/1/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  5. Jeremy Wedel (11/27/76) was the Phillies' 20th round pick in the 1998 amateur draft. It was a tale of two seasons for Wedel in 2002, giving up only four runs over his first 30 IP (1.20 RA), and then 20 runs over his next 30 (6.00 RA). His overall season totals turned out okay, and his 2003 split the difference when he was not out with an arm injury. He begins 2004 with his forearm in a cast, and won't be playing until at least the All-Star break. (updated 4/2/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  14. Steve Woodard has provided over 600 major league innings to the Brewers and Indians since 1997 that range from a high of major-league average to a low of about replacement level, with a career ERA+ of 93. This year, he was given a chance with the Rangers, but after a 6.62 ERA over 14 games, he was given a choice of AAA or his release. He chose the later and signed as a free agent with Scranton on June 4, 2002. He has generally been successful during his stints in the minors, turning in a 2.39 ERA in 6 starts at Buffalo in 2001. In 2002, he put up the same sorts of numbers out of the bullpen at Scranton. After one mediocre spot start, Woodard was (considering Scranton's shortage of pitchers) inexplicably released and picked up by Memphis (Cardinals AAA) (updated 1/27/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  16. Ken Woods (8/2/70) was signed by the Phillies organization at the very end of the 2001 season after appearing with them for all of 2000. It was his third organization of the year.
