1. Carlos Urrutia (9/3/81) was originally signed by the Cubs out of Venezuela before the 1999 season. He missed all of the 2001 season with an injury, and was released after the 2002 season, and signed by the Phillies. (updated 2/1/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

  2. Chase Utley (L) (12/17/78) was the Phillies first round draft pick in the 2000 amateur draft (15th overall pick.) He has moved quickly through the system. In 2002, he skipped Reading was moved to third base at Scranton as a potential successor to Scott Rolen. This "experiment" met with mixed results, as Utley thrived in AAA, has 28 errors at third base, the most errors by any player in the Phil's minor league system. The signing of David Bell moved Utley back to second base, where he was supposed to take over in 2005. Placido Polanco's unexpected acceptance of arbitration means that Utley will have competition for playing time now, however. (updated 3/3/05) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)
