Elizardo Ramirez (1/28/83) was signed by the Phillies as a free agent out of the Dominican Republic in July, 1999. In 2001, he went 10-1 with a 1.26 ERA in 93 innings in the Dominican Summer League. His GCL performance was comparable, going 7-1 with an unreal 2 walks against 73 strikeouts. His 1.10 ERA was equally outstanding, although it should be noted that half of his runs allowed in 2002 were unearned. In the post-season, he pitched the second game of a double-header for a complete game victory. In 2003, he succeeded in a triple-jump to Clearwater, and is on track for a starting role in Reading in 2004.(updated 8/30/02) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Robert Read (7/12/81) was drafted by the Phillies in the 7th round of the 2002 amateur draft out of Florida State University. Despite a college ERA over five, Read performed well at Batavia, which the organization attributed to his ability to go inside against hitters with wood bats. His ERA skyrocketed in 2003, however, perhaps out of proportion to the modest deterioration of his peripherals. He will need to improve substantially in 2004. Brian Reith (2/28/78) was claimed off of waivers from the Cincinnati Reds on July 11. The proximate cause of his signing was Joe Roa's call up to the majors. On August 6, 2002, he was placed on waivers, and re-claimed by the Cincinnati Reds. (updated 1/27/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Maximo Reyes was the Phillies' 48th (and last) pick in the 2001 amateur draft out of St. Petersburg (FL) Junior College. Despite his pedigree, Maximo pitched well enough to earn a promotion to Batavia in 2002 -- a promotion that lasted all of a week until he was shipped back to Florida based primarily on the fact that he hadn't turned 21 yet and the GCL roster was looking kind of old. He missed all of 2003 with an injury. (updated 2/11/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)
Juan Richardson (1/10/79) was signed as a free agent out of the Dominican Republic. Considered at one time to be a prospect, his solid power numbers at Clearwater could make up for his high strikeout total, but not for the two years he aged in the off-season when his real birth certificate was found. He was, however, the MVP of the 2002 Florida State League All-Star Game, going 3-4 with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth, and was a solid performer in 2003, splitting time at third base. (updated 1/21/03) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)
Justin Riley (9/15/80) was signed as the Phillies 34th round draft pick in the 2003 draft out of North Carolina State. He spent time on the DL and appeared in only 8 games.(updated 2/11/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Erick Rivera (5/22/81) was drafted in the 42nd round of the 1999 amateur draft out of Luis Munoz Rivera High School in Puerto Rico. Only 21, Rivera has not progressed at all this year, and will likely not return unless the organization considers him a "project" of some sort, in which case he won't return after next year. He started the season in Lakewood, was demoted as soon as short-season ball started, and finished the year with a short opportunity to fail in Clearwater. He was released prioir to the 2003 season. Joe Roa (10/11/71) underwent Tommy John surgery in 2000. He was cut from the Pirates in the pre-season, and added to the Scranton roster as organizational depth. At the age of 30, he proceeded to have the best start ever by a Red Barons pitcher, starting the season 14-0 (he was actually 20-0, in his last 20 AAA decisions, dating back to 2001 in Calgary). He was promoted to the majors during the All-Star break, for his first major league games since 1997. Although he made the team out of Spring Training in 2003, he was quickly lost when Terry Adams came off of the DL. (updated 2/11/04) (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)

Chris Roberson (8/23/79) was the Phillies' 9th round pick in the 2002 amateur draft out of Feather River College. A strong finish salvaged what would have otherwise been a disappointing debut year. Also note that Roberson had 10 HBPs in 2002, which doubled the second highest amount on the team. 2003 was a disappointment, as Roberson failed to thrive at Lakewood. Chris Rupert (6/19/80) was signed as an undrafted fee agent out of Minnesota State in June, 2002 (same school as 29th round pick Adam Steen). His numbers look pretty good, although he was primarily used in low-leverage situations as a "finisher" (like a closer, but when you're losing) in 2002. As a college graduate, he should have been successful at Lakewood by this point, but was demoted to Batavia when short-season began. He should not be back in 2004 .
