1. Russ Jacobson (10/14/77) was the Phillies' third round pick in the 1999 amateur draft. His .380 batting average in college never translated over into pro ball, however. He hit .247 in the South Atlantic in 2000, .208 in Clearwater in 2001, and .195 in 2002. And despite this he was invited to play in the 2002 Arizona Fall League (where he hit a surprising .273, but in a total of only 33 at bats for two different teams). And to make matters worse, he has thrown out only about 25% of potential basestealers, so his defense hasn't lived up to hype either. Jacobson qualifies as a high-round bust. (updated 3/8/2004). 7. Jason Johnson (8/21/77) was the Phil's 12th round pick in the 1996 amateur draft (he was drafted by Cincinnati in 1995 but did not sign). He has slowly, methodically moved through the system, playing adequately, if not "well" at every level, and missing only 2 months in 1998 to the DL (torn rotator cuff). Repeated Reading after spending half of 2001 there, Johnson has not exactly stepped up his performance. He is known as a stolen base guy (20+ per year), and has no power (7 total professional homers in 5 1/2 seasons). He was a free agent in the off-season, and ended up in the Atlantic League. 9. Terry Jones (3/20/83) was signed in the fourth round of the Phillies 2001 draft out of Upland (CA) High School. Considered by some to be a top prospect, Jones' started weakly with 9 uninspired games in the GCL in 2001,and 43 subpar games in 2002 straddling time missed for a broken foot. Despite the low average, 2003 was practically a breakout season for Jones, and I'll be excited to see how he does in Clearwater. Jones is also actress Holly Robinson Peete's Eagles quarterback husband Rodney Peete's second cousin, which I think qualifies him for a guest appearance on "21 Jump Street". (updated 3/8/2004). 10. Eric Junge (1/5/77) was originally a 11th round draft pick of the Dodgers in the 1999 amateur draft. He was trade to Philadelphia before the 2002 season as part of the Omar Daal trade and earned a few appearances with the big club in September. There are stories that he is being groomed to be a closer. (updated 3/8/2004). (Back to the Phillies' Depth Chart)
