1. Paul Abbott (R) (9/15/67) was released by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in June, 2004, due to his 6+ ERA, and immediately snapped up by the Phillies, where he also provided a 6+ ERA. Despite providing exactly what should have been expected of him, he was demoted to Scranton in mid-August. He was released after the minor league season, in early September. (updated 9/21/04)

2. Bobby Abreu (L) (3/11/74) was signed as a free agent out of Venezuela in 1990 by the Houston Astros. In 1997, he was left unprotected in the expansion draft, and was claimed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who immediately traded him to Philadelphia for Kevin Stocker. The regular in right fielder since 1998, Abreu became the first Phillies to join the 30/30 club in 2001. He is signed to a 5 year, $64 million through 2007 with a team option for 2008. 3. Nielsen Abreu (R) (4/1/79) was signed as a free agent out of Venezuela in 1999. Yes, he's Bobby's younger brother. No, he was never a prospect. Nielson had been kicking around short season ball since 2000, and his short-lived late June promotion to Lakewood was his first only taste of even low-A ball. He also has appeared occasionally in the outfield for the Camden Riversharks in 2001 as "Nelson Abreu". Although a relatively good defenseman, he hit for moderate average with no power, which was not a recipe for rapid advancement. 4. Carlos Acevedo (R) (1/31/79) was signed as a free agent out of the Dominican Republic in September, 1997. He lost major prospect points by aging an extra two years before the 2002 season, and losing two months in 2002 to a fractured wrist. Not that he was much of a prospect to begin with. He is hitting near the Mendoza line, and didn’t survive long into the 2003 season. (updated 4/15/04)

5. Derek Adair (R) (8/25/75) was the Phillies' 7th round draft pick in the June, 1997 amateur draft out of St. John's University. In 1998, he combined with Ken Ryan to pitch the last six innings of a no-hitter. Always inconsistent, he lasted only one more year. (updated 4/15/04)

6. Dan Adams (R) (2/21/78) was drafted by the Phillies in the 33rd round of the 2000 amateur draft out of Kent State. In 2002, he led Lakewood by appearing in 50 games, although he only threw 69 inning. His ERA was low in both 2000 and 2001, but blossomed to over 4.00 at Clearwater in 2002. Never considered a prospect, Adams did not have the luxury to have an off year for a pitching rich organization. He got a brief shot in the Reading bullpen in 2003, but then disappeared into the Independent Northeastern League. (updated 4/16/04)

7. Terry Adams (R) (3/6/73) was orginally drafted by the Cubs in the 4th round of the 1991 amateur draft. Later traded to the Dodgers, he signed as a free agent with the Phillies before the 2002 season. Although he has never started a major league game until 2001, he was signed by the Phillies as a starter, but inconsistency and overall poor numbers eventually pushed him back to the bullpen, where he thrived. He was be back for a full season in the 'pen in 2003 and left as a free agent following that season. He played in 2004 with Boston and Toronto before re-signing with the Phils for the 2005 season. He was ineffective in 2005, demoted to Scranton, and then released. He appears to have signed a minor league deal with Pittsburgh for 2006. (updated 1/11/06)

8. Doug Aguiar (R) (2/20/77) was signed by the Phillies as a free agent out of Venezuela in November, 1994. He pitched mainly in relief in Rookie ball for two years, where he did not thrive. He injured his should in July 1997, and never played for the Phils again.(updated 5/27/04)

9. Trino Aguilar (R) (7/27/83) was signed by the Phillies as a free agent out of Venezuela in before the 2001 season. 13. Kyle Allen (L) (7/27/83) was the Phillies' 16th round draft pick in the 2004 amateur draft, out of Lewis and Clark State College. With a high-80s fastball, Allen will have to rely on his control, which is reportedly good. 14. Ben Ally (R) (2/9/79) was the Phillies' 18th round pick in the 2001 amateur draft out of Warner Southern College in Florida. He led the team in ERA, but 2/3 of his runs were unearned. Despite the solid performance, he was released before the 2002 season, and played for the Washington Wild Things in the Independent Frontier League before being picked up by the Astros. Clemente Alvarez (R) (5/18/68) had been wandering around the minors for over decade between when he was first signed as a free agent out of Venezuela by the White Sox in 1968 and when he signed with the Phils in 1999. 19. Manny Amador (S) (11/21/75) was signed by the Phils as an amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic n January, 1993. He climbed rapidly throughout the organization as a part time utility infielder, peaking in 1998 when he made repeated trips along the Northeast Extension, promoted and demoted numerous times between Scranton and Reading. He slid in 1998, getting demoted to Clearwater in June and out of the organization by the end of the season. After his playing career, Amador coached for a season in the Dominican Summer League, spent time in Reading, and is currently the hitting coach for the Clearwater Threshers. (updated 6/1/04)

20. Marlon Anderson (L) (1/6/74) was drafted by the Phillies in the 2nd round of the 1995 amateur draft. He has been the Phillies' starting second baseman off and on since 1999. Promising as a 25 year old, by 2002 he was considered inadequate defensively and subpar offensively. The signing of David Bell to play third (allowing Polanco to move to second) and the move of Chase Utley back to second base in the minors made Anderson superfluous. 23. Erick Arteaga (R) (4/2/81) was signed as a free agent out of Venezuela in 1999. He perfoarmed well in 2001, his first year in America and earned a promotion to Batavia. Although his ERA was better than teammate Carlos Cabrera's, Cabrera's better fastball and higher K rate make him the more projectable of the two pitchers. He missed the entire 2003 season due to some identification issues that were never fully explained. He was reinstated, however, and was back for 2004 and 2005, although without nearly the same results. (updated 1/11/06)

24. Ezequiel Astacio (R) (11/4/79) was signed as a free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 1998. He was included as one of Baseball America's Top 20 Phillies' Prospects before the 2003 season. His results so far have been fairly impressive, but his peripherals are questionable (only 100K in 152 IP). He also picked up an extra year of age before the 2003 seasons, which drops him down a notch. In the end, he has not so much "fallen out of" the Top 20, as been passed by others who have stepped forward more or at higher levels (or at least aged more slowly). Still, a valid prospect, he was traded with Brandon Duckworth and Taylor Buchholz to Houston for Billy Wagner. (updated 3/29/04)

25. Bruce Aven (R)(3/4/72) was acquired from Cleveland in late June, 2002 for minor league vet pitcher Jeff D'Amico. Scranton was scratching for offensive players following a string of injuries, so Aven was more of a Red Barons fix than positioning for a potential big-league promotion. He signed a minor league deal with the Blue Jays as a free agent before the 2003 season. (updated 1/29/03)

26. Rob Avila (R) (9/4/78) was the Phillies' 18th round pick in the 1999 amateur draft. He is a versatile player who, besides playing the outfield and first base, is the team's third catcher. Unfortunately, "versatile" doesn't nessarily mean "good". His spotty offensive numbers peaked with a .273 average in Lakewood in 2001, before plummeting to around the Mendoza line in 2002. He has a little bit of power, but not enough to make up for his low average. He was released after the 2003 season.(updated 12/4/03)

27. Francisco Aybar (R)(12/2/83) was signed as a free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2003. He returned to the Dominican in 2004, but to very poor results, turning in a .140 batting average in 43 at bats. (updated 9/22/04)
