~Tapestry of a Common Man~
March-April 2003
In the Lakota Tradition, the most a man could aspire to be is an Ikce Wicasa, or common man. The Lakota Lifeways promote unity and understanding, therefore sharing and ways of friendship are esteemed. Success is weighed not by how much one can get, but by how much one is willing to give. Interrelatedness and kinship play a central role in all things. Truly like a tapestry our lives are intertwined.
It is a joy to be able to present a veritable tapestry of collectors and works. Over 20 collectors and over 40 works spanning 6 years along with a few new works make up this show. To present these works and especially the interweaving relationships with the collectors thereof at the 32nd Annual Symposium on the American Indian at Iowa State University is quite an honor. So many People were involved in the planning and creation of this venture. I am very fortunate to have such a group of Humanity truly interwoven into my life. Thank you all who helped weave this tapestry of a common man.
