The Journal of
Scientific Discographical Analysis

A very long time ago I did a fanzine called DMR which focussed mainly on what we used to call alternative music. Nowadays everything is so fragmented it's becoming hard to remember when such a label made sense (or appeared to make sense, in as much as any label can). But make sense it did, and for most of the '80s I would always look first for the 'alternative' section in any record shop I visited. And I wrote about the records I found in the pages of DMR.

DMR consisted mostly of album and live show reviews until I began to include indepth artist and label discographies. My inspiration for these articles was Record Collector magazine, which was a fantastic source of information at the time I am writing about (its since re-launched itself as a more general purpose music magazine) but which seemed to ignore the bands I was interested in. When they did cover 'my' bands, the articles were usually riddled with errors e.g. Sonic Youth or the Butthole Surfers. So I decided to do the same kind of articles in my fanzine. I even gave these articles a name: the Scientific Discographical Analysis Series. It eventually took over the fanzine. I even did two special issues dedicated to Sonic Youth and the Butthole Surfers alone.

These days you can find just about anything on the net. There are no secrets anymore, no mysteries, no unknown gems waiting to be discovered. The most obscure, unheard of, barely documented artist has his own webpage; you can download mp3 of things you never even guessed existed, let alone sought. This is why Record Collector had to change it's focus (not to mention the affect ebay must have had on it's advertising section) and it's partly why I stopped doing the fanzine (the other reason being I was in danger of becoming an obsessive!)

But even so, even now there are still gaps in the incredible information source that is the web, and there are still bands and labels which were covered in DMR which have no presence on the web. This is why I started this page. I intend to reproduce selected discographies here.

The following discographies are supplied for information purposes only. If you spot any errors, or have any suggestions, please email me at dmr.records@gmail.com.

Incidentally, there was at least one other fanzine which called itself DMR. That was a German language hardcore (punk) zine from circa 1990. I am not that guy!
