  • genrization is an analogy given to describe how musical genres have evolved:
              1. Genetic Material (DNA)--musical layers
              2. Replication Procedure--musical influences
              3. Fitness Function--aesthetics + success
              4. Mutations--sometimes mistakes have the best outcomes

    Various Genres
  • Acid House
         -"experimental form of house"; it was known for being associated with the race scene and drugs. Examples of acid house songs are "My Melody" by Tyree and "Into the Future".
  • Trance/Psy/Goa
         -music that creates a trance-like state.
         -Goa refers to a group of hippies from Goa, India
         -P.L.U.R refers to peace, love, unity and respect.
  • Jungle
         -predominant during the 1990s, jungle music is rooted from reggae music and has futuristic sounds.
  • Brit
         -example of Brit are: "Music Response" by Chemical Brothers, "Herd Killing," by FSOL and "Dead Cities" by FSOL.

    Rave Culture
  • techniques of DJs (through turntables): beat matching and scratching
  • a dance party can consist of as little as 100 people, or as many as 30,000.
  • people usually act very differently during raves and wear childish clothing
  • associated with drug use, especially ecstacy and LSD
  • An analogy associated with rave is a social theater, whereas the DJ is the director, ravers are the audience, the drama is the communal interaction, the script is the music, and the space is where the rave takes place.
