Midnight Syndicate
Okay, so it’s not October, and Halloween has passed. But that doesn’t mean the timing is wrong for some fabulously frightening music! In fact, it is this Webbe-Mistress’ opinion that this group has more impact when it *isn’t* the Halloween season! People never get freaked out when I blast these haunting tunes on my car stereo in October, but you should just see the looks I get at Christmas.... In this spirit, I am very proud (and very honored as a HUGE fan) to host Midnight Syndicate as the November featured artist!
Midnight Syndicate was formed by Edward Douglas and Gavin Goszka in the early 1990’s to create “soundtracks for the imagination”. That’s actually what I like most about them! No matter how many times you hear their CDs, you always have a different experience. Because the music manipulates your imagination, the mental journey you take is never going to be the same twice! As far as bang for your buck goes, I’d say that if you can listen to a CD 100 times and get something new out of it each time (and EVERY CD by a group is the same way), then every CD by the group is a must-have! Who can argue with music that never gets old?
These guys are certainly the real deal, and have inspired other bands to try their hand at the ethereal horror music gig. They’ve released 8 CDs to date, and have totally revamped- pardon the pun- the way most people view Halloween-season soundtracks. No longer do we Children of the Night have to suffer through mushy remixes of "Monster Mash"! For an independent band with music that’s hard to get out into the mainstream, Midnight Syndicate has done pretty well. They held 6 of the top 10 slots on MP3.com for Halloween week, 2001, and their CDs have been sold just outside Disney’s Haunted Mansion! If your city is anything like mine, Goth music is played between midnight and 3AM on Saturday mornings, by a lackluster and sleepy DJ performing for class credit on a static-ridden public radio station that no one in their right mind would bother with... Screw that! Set these guys on your CD player and get real music!
