Shepherds Bush Empire
1st October 2000

On Sunday I arrived around the same time as I did the previous day, I wanted to get my front row space again! Everyone was reading copies of News Of The World because it claimed that Left Eye was going to be performing with Melanie at the gig that night. Apparently, Paul, one of Melanie’s guitarists, had come and told fans that Lisa was going to be there. It turned out that she couldn’t make it but Melanie still had another surprise for us…

The gig itself followed an almost identical pattern as the night before. I thought it was strange that Melanie wore exactly the same outfit as Saturday, but she still looked great! (If you want a detailed description of the gig then read my Saturday review, this one is based on what made Sunday different)

There were lots of photographers down in front of the stage and they had all been given set lists. Some girls next to me asked to see one of them and they saw “When You’re Gone” on the list. No-one was really sure whether or not Bryan was definitely going to be there but I was really hoping he would!

After the teddy bear throwing session on Saturday night I felt the need to have one with me on Sunday. I’d been down to the shops with a friend to get a load of teddies for Melanie. We came back with Winnie The Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and a big bear. We spent the afternoon attaching various messages to them and we threw them at Melanie during the gig. I got Pooh and managed to hit Melanie’s leg with him (only softly though, I wasn’t trying to hurt her!) I was so chuffed when she picked him up and held him for a little while. I got a photo of her holding my Pooh Bear! She sat him down on the platform where the keyboards were so Pooh appears in most of my photos from then on. Piglet, Tigger and the other bear all managed to make the stage as well!

Up to this point the set list had been identical to Saturday, the performance was pretty similar too. But then Melanie forgot the words to “Goin’ Down”! I think she got a bit over excited, she was jumping about like a nutter and everyone in the audience was going mad too. When it came to the middle of the first verse she just stopped singing, then she started laughing and then she sung “Laa Laaaa La La La” until it got to the chorus, where luckily she started singing the real words. Or that was until she decided to change “My karma must be bad” to “My karma’s ****ing ****” The swearing had been almost non-existent up until then, I think she’d been told to keep a lid on the swearing because of the Worldpop webcast. A Melanie gig doesn’t feel right without a few naughty words though!

Never Be The Same Again was the final track before the encore, I kept looking to the side of the stage to see if Left Eye was there but I couldn’t tell. The audience seemed to hold their breath at the point in the song where the rap starts, still no Left Eye. Melanie said that unfortunately she couldn’t make it. There had also been no Bryan so I was starting to get a little worried that he wasn’t coming either.

After about 5 minutes Bryan casually walked out onto the stage and said “Am I at the right gig!?!?” while slinging a guitar over his shoulder. The audience were screaming, I was extra loud! Melanie followed him onstage and said “Did you like our little joke? Hahahah” They hadn’t rehearsed this, Melanie said so, and it took them a little while to get their mic stands in the right places and everything. They did a perfect performance of “When You’re Gone” complete with the dancing! They look even cuter together in real life, and they sounded amazing! Bryan walked off again after the song, then Melanie followed him. I wasn’t really sure whether or not she would come back again and do “I Turn To You” but luckily she did. Then Melanie did all her thank-yous because it was the last night of the tour, Bryan made it a special one too!

Once the gig had finished it took me ages to get a setlist, in the end I managed it so it follows this review.
