Marengo County, Alabama

Stones remaining in this cemetery are:
Fragment – Frances, beloved wife of …Footstone: F.R. (This is the wife of Elijah Rawls);
Norris, Nathan June 10, 1820 – Sept 28, 1849 Age 29 years 3 mo. 18da.
James F. Morris Jan 30, 1849 – Aug 2, 1856 Age 7 years 6 mo. 3 da.
It is logical to assume that there are other burials – unmarked or with stones that have been destroyed. Elijah Rawls himself is probably buried here; his son, Benjamin Rawls who died July of 1852; a neighbor, Jane Patterson, wrote on August 10 of that year "…Jawague, a dreadful disease…Ben Rawls died of it." Jawague was a very virulent type of malaria: Pernina Rawls, daughter of William and Elinor Walston and wife of Isaac Rawls, who died in May of 1856 – and of course, possibly other unknowns may have found their last resting place in this cemetery.
