What is a Poetry Slam?
A poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry.Poets write original poetry on any style and subject and perform there poetry before a live audiance.Five judges are ramdomly selected from the audiance and they are given scorecards to judge each performer on a Dewey decimal system based upon literary content and performance. The highest score for a performance is a ten with the lowest score a zero. The high score and the low score are dropped and the three middle scores are tabulated for the total of a performance for ex:A poet recieved a 8.8,9.0,9.1,9.5,9.7 from the judges in this instance the 8.8 and the 9.7 is dropped while the 9.0+9.1+9.5 are tabulated for a total of 27.6 for that poet.A perfect score for a performance is a 30.

Coming soon in indepth word for word biography of the 2006 Baton Rouge National Poetry Grand Slam Finals
As promised slam poet Yah fu will use this section of the website to give his visitors his account on the night of the 2006 Baton Rouge National Poetry Slam Team Grand Slam Finals as each poet performed with grace and passion before a packed Tequila's Cafe' house here it goes...
The nine finalists were called onside the stage to draw numbers to determine what order each poet will go with round one order reversed in round two the order consist of 1.Yahfu the Omega Prodigal Son,2.Bard,3.Jazz,4.Xero Skidmore,5.Ghost,6.Travis,7.Donnie Brasco,8.Tasha Weatherspoon, and 9.Grace as you no doubt notice Yah fu drew #1.
After the goat performed Yah fu performed his poem and recieved a 8.8,9.2,9.4,9.7,9.9 for a total of 28.3,
Bard was 2nd and did a good job in choosing the right poem and raised the bar early with a score of 9.4,9.7,9.9,10,10 for a total of 29.6
Jazz was up next and read a new poem off of paper that had some tight metaphors and got scores of 9.0,9.2,9.3,9.3,9.8 for a total of 27.8
Next in line was the Baton Rouge La 2006 Individual Grand Slam Champion Xero Skidmore in which he forgot his poem in the middle of it repeated lines, recovered, and freestyle the rest of the poem he had recieved scores of 9.5,9.6,9.7,9.8,9.9 for a total of 28.1 after a time penalty.
Ghost the Dreamcatcher was up next and put up a solid and clean performance and got 9.4,9.5,9.6,9.7,9.7,for a total of 28.8
Travis went up next and whoooed the crowed with a amazing mixture of written text and performance and got a 9.7,9.8,9.9,9.9,and a 10 for a 29.6
Donnie Brasco was up next and performed a new poem fumble through a few lines but recovered nicely and got a 9.5,9.5,9.7,9.7,9.8 for a 28.9
Tasha Weatherspoon took over the lead with a near flawless performance and got a 9.5,9.9,9.9,10,10=29.8
Last but not least Grace was the final poet to peform her poem was nice and her performance was solid she got a 8.9,9.4,9.5,9.6,9.6 but with a (TP)ended with a 28.0
As you can see although I was the 1st poet to perform out of the nine finalists I was in 6th place after the 1st round with a 28.3 and only .6 of a point behind the 4th place poet Donnie Brasco with a 28.9 that proves anything is possible in the wacky world of slam poetry.
Round 2 the order was reversed and 8th rank Grace went up 1st and got a much better response with her performance and got a 9.5,9.7,9.8,9.8,9.8=29.3 for a two round total of 57.3 good enough for a tie of 7th place
Next in line was the poet who left no doubt and I mean non whatsoever about who will be the Baton Rouge Grand Slam Champion Tasha Weatherspoon iced the cake with four 10's and a 9.7 that was dropped for a perfect score of 30 and a unbeatable two round total of 59.8
Next in line Donnie Brasco who held off a ferious rally by National Phenom Xero Skidmore to nab the 4th spot getting a 29.5 for his effort and a two round total of 58.4
Next in line was Travis who was only two of the nine finalists to recieve all 10s and nabbing a spot on the National Slam Team with a two round total of 59.6
Next up Ghost the Dreamcatcher who perform a love poem in round two something that was tight but was against the grain of tonights theme and got a 29.1 for a two round total of 57.9 good enough for 6th place in the finals
Next Xero Skidmore who redeemed himself from a subpar round 1 performance with a mesmerizing display of artistic power and got all 10's but his two round total of 58.1 was not enough to beat out Donnie Brasco for the final spot and finished 5th
Jazz was up next who had to follow a tuff act by Xero but held her ground with three 9.5's a 9.4,and a 9.8 for a 28.5 and a two round total of 56.3Our next performer filled the final spot on the 2006 National Slam Team Bard who entered round 2 tied for 2nd and with a 29.3 round 2 score nab the 3rd spot with a two round total of 58.9
Our last poet Yah fu the Omega Prodigal Son decided to perform his poem away from the microphone and got some pretty good marks of 9.5,9.5,9.6,9.9,9.9=for a total of 29.0 and a two round total of 57.3 good enough for a tie for 7th place.
I want to thank each and every supporter of my website and I hope your visit is a pleasent one.
