"Birds" by director Diane Janowski is a look at life with a thin, ascetic, naked structure in which lonesome and singularly expressive actions circle like falling autumn leaves; and against it softly dissonant movements in the middle register, constantly repeating the same iambic rhythm-pattern. Together this creates an atmosphere of vague melancholy, of mysticism and exoticism. Perhaps there is also a fin-de-siècle feeling, even some salon nostalgia.

Director's Statement

For me real time footage lacks the most important delicate elements. To truly appreciate life, one must view it at a altered speed. I instinctually slow down parts of footage that needs to be appreciated. “Birds” is an extremely unique film because it allows the grace and elegance of sparrows to truly resonate. Real time would never have allowed these qualities to arise.
