OXNARD POLICE DEPARTMENT

EXPLORER POST 9286

What are Law Enforcement Explorers?

Law Enforcement Explorer posts help youth to gain insight into a variety of programs that offer hands-on career activities. For young men and women who are interested in careers in the field of law enforcement, Exploring offers experiential learning with lots of fun-filled, hands-on activities that promote the growth and development of adolescent youth.

Explorer Post 9286 is sponsored by the Oxnard Police Department as a community-based policing program. This successful program is designed to educate and involve young men and women in police operations and to interest them in law enforcement functions whether they enter the law enforcement field or not.

As an Explorer, young adults have the opportunity to assist the Oxnard Police Department. Explorers can broaden their understanding and firsthand knowledge of the challenges and job skills that make up their community's police service. In addition to gaining a working knowledge of police work, the participants have the opportunity to give of themselves to their community. Although Post 9286 is law enforcement oriented, Explorers are volunteers and do not serve as police employees, sworn or civilian.

About Post 9286

The Oxnard Police Department’s Explorer Post began in 1973. Through its history there have been thousands and thousands of hours donated to the city, the police department, and the community by these young adults.

Currently we have 20 young adults, ranging in ages from 14 years to 20 years, residing in Oxnard, Port Hueneme, and Camarillo.

In addition to high school classes, sports activities, college semesters and jobs, these young men and women must complete an intense, para-military, three-week academy during the summer.

In addition to all this, the Explorers donate thousands of hours at the station: in Property, Investigations, Communications, and Records. There are rewarded for these station hours by participating in monthly ride-a-longs with the officers.

The Explorers also receive training in various areas of Law Enforcement, such as, CPR & First Aid, Radio Procedures, Report Writing, Patrol Procedures, Fingerprinting, Traffic and Narcotics, to name a few. Successful completion of the training in these areas earns them service ribbons, which they then wear on their uniforms.

Many of these Explorers enter into a Law Enforcement career after leaving the program. For those that do not, the valuable life lessons they learned while part of the program will benefit them in whatever career path they choose.
