The House

This is my dad's new house in Hawaii (my
family is out front). The little town they live in is probably
one of the least touristy places on Oahu. It used to "the boonies,"
but recently, they've been developing it a lot more as a nice suburbian
area. There's everything from K-Marts (that sell liquor! not something
you'd see in Oregon) to Home Depots to local libraries. The culture
is pretty evident any place you go, though. There are Hawaiian
goods at virtually any store you enter. The local vernacular is
something known as "pidgin
English" and is heard and
written almost everywhere. For example, the other day at the store,
we bought
"pork butt," not pork shanks, legs, rear or anything.
Pork butt. I'm surprised they didn't take it one step further and
call it pig ass. Yum.
