began his training as a performer at the age of five, studying   piano with his church organist. He continued his lessons for over four years. He studied with teachers in both Hamilton and Kitchener, and performed in many recitals. However, at the age of eleven he discovered the trumpet and began private instruction two years later. Matt has also been studying voice since 1999.

In September of 1995, Matt entered the Music program at Wilfrid Laurier University. He studied trumpet intensively with international trumpet sensation Guy Few and also received instruction in theory and improvisation. He also studied Psychology and Music Therapy, and received his Honours Bachelor of Music Therapy, with distinction, in June of 1999.

Matt has been teaching privately since high school and is currently the Brass Instructor at the Waterloo Music Academy. In addition to one-on-one lessons, Matt has also coached various groups ranging from brass quintets to large ensembles.

Highlights of his performance career include the Drayton Festival Theatre’s annual Alan Lund Memorial Benefit Concert in both 1998 and 1999; the Sanderson Centre with the Wilfrid Laurier University Baroque Opera; the Centre in the Square with the WLU Orchestra; performing with the Quinte Brass in April of 2000; and of course recording his first album, Travel, a collection of "classical" music from various countries such as Spain, England, Russia and the United States.

Matt has also been a member of the Windjammers for many years and has performed in numerous concerts, sometimes as a soloist. He played on their first album, Swingphonic (released in the fall of 2000) and also on Karen K. Edissi’s, Broadway Baby which features the Windjammers.

Matt is also working regularly as a producer. He produced the soundtrack for the film The Nature of Reality and Karen K. Edissi’s, Broadway Baby. He was also co-executive producer for Windjammers’ Swingphonic.

His most recent project was a solo piano recording with Tokyo's Yumi Takagi.

A REVIEW OF A PAST JAZZ ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE
"Leads, of course, must set the style of playing for their sections and develop an edge which dominates the section ever so slightly thus giving the section it's character...much credit must go to lead trumpet Matt Soble..."
