BUNDI

Sitting on a narrow gorge in the hills and encircled by walled fortifications eith four gateways, Bundi is one of the most picturesque towns in Rajasthan. The kingdom of Bundi was founded by the Hada Chauhans, a warrior clan who originally ruled Ajmer and Delhi. But after their last great ruler Prithviraj Chauhan was humbled by Muhammed Ghori in 1993, the Haras made their way into Mewar and finally settled on the land usurped from Bundi

BUNDI DURG (TARAGARH)

The magnificent Taragarh or the star fort was construct by Rao Raja Bar Singh in 1354 AD. The outer fort wall was construct by Dalil, Governor of jaipur, in the first half of the eighteenth century, when Bundi surendered its sovereignty to the Jaipur state. This white fort, perched on top of a thickly-wooded hill at a height lf 1426 feet, is one of the major tourist attraction of india. The fort has a very sturdy construction and is extraordinary from the safety angle. It has a huge tank which oncesupplied the palace with water.

There are many places of interest inside the fort - like the Bheem Burj, situated in the middle, which is the highest Burj of the fort. Closeby, is a cenotaph which resembles the 84 colummed cenotaph constructed by Bhai Deva, the brother Bheem Rao Anirudh Singh.

THE GARH PALACE

This is considered to be one of the finest examples of Rajput architecture. The construction was started by Maharao Balwant Singh. A steep, paved carriage-way leads dto this palace through the Hazari Pol or sdthe Gte of the Thousand. Inside the palace, the Naubat Khana and the Hthi Pol are palaces of special interest.

RATAN DAUALT (DIWAN-I-AM)

It was a royal court built by Maharao Ratan Singh ji. The Diwan-e-Am was built in such a manner that it forms stables for nine horses and elephant. The royal marbel throne is a major attraction of this part.

CHHATRA MAHAL

This place was built by Maharao Shatrusal Singh ji. The main attraction of the palace is a roomfull of murals in the miniature style. The colour scheme of these paintingsare red, golden and blue. Besides the courtyard, a beautiful small pool and Hathiya Sal (with each one of its pillars composed of four wooden elephants) are notable. Glass and ivory work done on the gates is breathtaking. Phool Mehal and Badal Mahal can be seen for their paintings. Prior permission of the secretaty is to be sought from Motimahal for a visit.

CHITRASHALA

This is a beautiful pavilion and gallery of fascinating murals in the miniature style. The walls are adorned with elaborate paintings depicting scenes from the Ragmala and Raslila - the Radha - Krishna story. The colour scheme of all these paintings is blue, green, turquoise in white, touches of terracotta of yellow. These intricate paintings and murals are renowned for their style reflecting the charming world of contemporary art. The style of Bundi painting is famous for its Rang Yojna which is seen in every corner of Chitrashala.

The wall paintings of Bundi are so well known all over the world that no tourist ever goes back without seeeing them. There are many paintings, in the miniature style, which are worth seeing at the pavilion and gallery of murals; lf these Gangaur ka Drashya, Ranas with the Dasiyans, Teej of Sawan are wonderful and unique. No doubt the fame lf Chitrashala has spread the world over.

NAWAL SAGAR

This square-shaped artificial lake, broken up by islets, can be seen from thye fort. A temple of Varuna (Aryan god of Wind) stands half submerged in a corner of the lake. The reflection of the entire city and its places can be seen in the lake, making its a unique attraction of bundi. At sun set, the reflection of the rajmahal in the lake is a fascinating sight.

RANIJI-KI-BAORI

Outside the city walls it is a fine specimen of a step-well. It has a high arched gate, omate with excellent carvings on its pillars. The well has a depth of 46 meters and was built by a Rani of the Royal House. The architecture of the Baori is very typical. The intricate murals on the pillars, torans and gates dare wonderful.

SUKH MAHAL

This magnificent summer palace was constructed during the reign of Rao Raja Vishnu Singhj on the Sukh Sagar lake, amid the lush surroundings of a beautiful garden. It is said dthat an underground tunnel rens from Sukh Mahal to the old palace.

JAIT SAGAR LAKE

Nestled aming the hills, it is a beautiful lake built by Jaita Meena. The fleeting fountain in the lake is a beautiful sight, especially during the night. Terrace garden and Smrti Kunj are the other attraction of this lake.

PHOOL SAGAR

This palace. built in the 20th century, has an architectural style typical of thes times. Presently, it is the home of the former ruler. Prior permission of his secretary is to be sought for a visit.

SHIKAR BURJ

It was the royal hunting lodge. Nestled in the wood, amidst lush greenery, it is a beautiful picnic palace.

KSHAR BAGH

Near the Shikar Burj is an ancient well-maintained garden, where cenotaphs of the kings and queens of Bundi stand in all their rich architectural splendour.

CHAURASI KHAMBON KI CHHATRI OR EIGHTY FOUR PILLARED CENOTAPH

This remarkably well-constructed memorial was erected by Rao Raja Anirudh Singh in memory of his foster brother Deva, in 1683. The cenotaph has 84 columns decorated with beautiful etchings and a large Shivalinga in the centre.

EXCURSIONS KEDARESHWAR DHAM (BAN GANGA) (5km)

It is one of the most revered places in Bundi district, situated in the midst of a valley. The holy temple of Kedareshwar Mahadev stand on the bank of Ban Ganga. The waters of the nullah running through the hills were collected to form a Kund or reservoir. The natural beauty and holiness of this place attract people from all over.

Kedareshwar temple was constructed by the Rao Raja Kolhan of Bambavada, before the establishment of the Hada dynasty. The Shibvalinga is constructed within a single stone. The temples of Badri Narayan and Kedareshwar are also built here.

RAMESHWAR (20 KM)

Rameshwar - The cave temple of Lord Shiva - is surrounded by the Aravali ranges. It is a beautiful picnic spot amidst captivating surroundings. A water fall gurgles here during the monsoon.

KESHORAIPATAN(45 KM)

It is famous for the temple of Keshav Rai ji Maharaj (Gos Vishnu), which is standing on a huge platform at the bank of the river Chanmbal. The architecture and sculpture of the temple are exquisite. It is an important pilgrim center for the Hindus. The temple was constructed by Maharaja Shatru Sal of Bundi State, in 1601. The anci9ent Jain Tirthankar temple has made Keshoraipatan an important Jain pilgrimage center. Famous writer Nemi Chandra wrote teh renowned holy granth (text) the Vrahed Dravaya Sangrah, in this temple. The Mratunjaya Mahadev temple is one of the oldest temple of Rajasthan. Keshoraipatan is one of the oldest towns in India and was know nas A shram Nagar in ancient times.

RAMGARH (45 KM)

The Ramgarh game sanctuary is situated on Nainwa road. Permission of the forest department is required to visit this sanctuary.

BIJOLIA (50 KM)

The ancient city of Bijolia and thte forest are located on the Bundi-Chittaurgarh road. A paved courtyard on the side of the fort has a large temple of Lord Shiva in its center. A carved archway leads to this temple which has a fine image of the elephant-headed Ganesh as guardian, at the entrance.

MENAL (70 KM)

Menal lies on the road from Bundi to Chittaurgarh. It is famous for tthe comlex of Shiva temple, with carvings on the walls of the shrine depicting Hindus deities.

TALWAS (53 KM)

Has a magnificent fort which was built by Ajit Singh. Adjacent to it, is the temple of Dhooleshwar Mahadev and a wonderful waterfall which make the place worth a visit. Beside there is the beautiful Ratan Sagar Lake which, during the rainy season, is visited by animals like bear, leopard, and deer. Ramgarh Sanctuary is not fair for Talwas.

DUGARI (65 KM)

This village was established during the reign of the Solanki's Dugari is very famous for its beautiful adn lovely lake, which covers an area of 36 km. The marvellous lake was constructed in the 10th century when the Solanki Rajput ruled here. Hundred of migratory birds visit the Kanak Sagar lake during the winter months. The fort is situated on the bank. It is famous for the wall paintings which are based on the Bundi style. The palace of Dugari has a has a beautiful pavilion and a gallery of murals, in the miniature style. The walls of the palace are elaborately painted with scenes depicting the Raslila - the Radha Krishna story. The spotted deer, peacock, lion and elephanants are also painted on the walls. The Ram Mandir of Dugari is very famous. It has remnants of paintings which are more than 200 years old. The garden of Dugari is famous for chandan (sandalwood) trees. The natural and scenic beauty of the palace attracts many visitors.

INDRAGARH (77 KM)

Indragarh town nesties in a narrow vally fortified by huge walls with four gates . This beautiful and charming town is one of most important and prominent historical towns of Rajasthan. It was established by Inder Saal Singh Rao Raja of Bundi States. The fort seen here is indeed rare and unique. The town of Indragarh and the palace nearby are known for the famous temples for Mother Goddess Kali and Kamleshwar. The tank of Indragarh is considered to be one of the most attractive places in the Bundi district, especially during the rainy season.

FAIRS AND FESTIVAL
The Fairs and Festivals of Bundi reffect the vigour and lifestyle of the people.

1. Tejaji Fair (Dugari (Sept - Oct.)

This fair is dedicated tto teh folk character Tejaji. Large number of people gather here to take a bamboo for their village Tejaji temple. This fair continues for five days.

2. Keshorai patan Fair (Oct - Nov)

The celebrations start on kartik poornima and continues for ten days. Large number of devotees gather here to take a holy dip in teh river Chambal and pray to God Keshav Rai ji.

3. Kajli Teej (July - Aug)

The celebration of Kajli Teej in Bundi in different from the Teej festival celebration elsewhere in the state. At other places Teej is celebrated on the third day of the month of Shravana but in Bundi it is celebrated on the third day of the month of Bhadra.

4. Bundi festival starts with the procession if Teej in a decorated palanquin from the picturesque Navel Sagar and passes through the market culminating at Azad Park. Cultural programmes are organised in the evening in which local artists and those from Hadoti region perform.

Though the Teej procession is taken out only on two days, the celebration continue up to the 8th day culminating in Janamashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna.
