PA'S GIVING CHASE RETURNS TO CHICAGO
FOR HEADLINE SHOW AT FIRESIDE BOWL THIS SATURDAY

Eastern Pennsylvania has produced some very good or even great bands, but State College isn’t known for much of anything aside from shitty weather and football fanaticism. Giving Chase is one of a few bands leading a charge to change that. Come see for yourself this Saturday when they headline a show at the Fireside Bowl. This will be probably the third or fourth time GC has graced our beloved Second City but the first they've done so as headlining their own tour.

Borrowing from Kid Dynamite, Jawbreaker, and Lifetime but also having a style of their own, they play some dynamic, melodic punk rock. I've been enjoying their new EP "Still Waiting..." (pictured, left) released on Carlisle/Too Much Caffeine Records a few months ago. Most of the EP is played at a fairly fast pace, with some guitar shredding riffs, cluttered but tight drumming, but sometimes they slow things down a bit. Mike Woliansky's singing style is very distinct and recognizable, which is another very good asset that will help set this band apart from the pack. At times I’m reminded of the more melodic songs on Boy Sets Fire’s “After the Eulogy” such as on the song "Almost Half Full", definitely not an unfavorable comparison, especially considering how much I enjoy “After the Eulogy”.

Their live show is equally engaging, and they're one of those bands that's better live than on recording. Their records are great but don't capture the energy of their live show. I saw them open for Tsunami Bomb and Useless I.D. the last time they were in town, and GC kept up with them just fine. The ever-unpredictable Ryan Wilcox plays with a wireless guitar remote and will often be found - literally - bouncing off the walls or running through the crowd, or perched on the drum riser dodging Justin Shaner's manically flailing drumsticks. Woliansky keeps an energetic back-and-forth dynamic going with bassist Anthony Lalota, also most likely found flinging himself off of amplifiers or writhing on the floor. Most bands have a strength in performance or sound of a live show, but GC strikes a great balance of both.

Doors will open at 6:00, with the show starting at 7:00. There will be a $5 cover at the door, no advance ticket sales. Opening up will be Chicago's So Far (a great up-and-coming group in their own right) and Six Gun Romance, on tour from Battle Creek, MI.
