2001 has been a rough year for concerts in Pittsburgh. We've had two of our best venues in the Roman Room and the Millvale Industrial Theater closed off and on for renovations and/or code violations, and plenty of good shows getting cancelled or moved as a result. Thankfully Club Laga picked up the slack for some of them, including the Drive-Thru Records tour stop. In my opinion Laga is the better venue for this show anyway. It's got a bigger capacity, it can hold about 500 people and tickets still sold out in a day. I got mine early and stood front row, center for this show I've waited months for!

Giving Chase isn't a DTR band but they fit in well as the opener. They play a driving melodic style of punk and reminded me of Lifetime and poppier songs from the Get-Up-Kids. Most people was outside hanging around the DTR buses looking for autographs and pictures so Giving Chase didn't play to a huge crowd but it didn't seem to matter to them, they played with energy like they were playing to a packed stadium. They sounded great and I wouldn't be suprised to see them on DTR someday. My friends and I really liked them.

Midtown was up next, and with them being label-mates and having so much in common with NFG it was pretty obvious they were extremely happy to be on the tour. After a huge explosion in popularity after the release of their debut full length Save the World (Lose the Girl), the band has been everywhere and showed no signs slowing down. The band struck the first note of Just Rock and Roll and the sold-out Laga crowd went straight into stage dives, crowd surfing, and singing along so loud that you couldn’t even hear Gabe sing. Unlike their last couple tours, Midtown had all its original members and proved themselves to be a much better live band then ever before. They played for about 40 minutes, playing almost all of Save the World (Lose the Girl) and closed things off with a brand new song from their forthcoming album Living Well Is the Best Revenge, leaving the crowd anxious for New Found Glory.

New Found Glory came out and jumped right into Sticks and Stones, setting off a way bigger and crazier crowd then Midtown. The entire venue exploded at the first line of Understatement and the band proved that they could be even better in a small punk club then on a huge stage with a light show. It was very odd being so close to the band and seeing Jordan give out his microphone to the crowd through more then half of each song, but it was so awesome at the same time. I've only ever seen them at Warped Tour and have never seen the band get so close and intimate with the audience. The band kept playing through all of their albums and the crowd didn’t stop the entire time. They added some commentary about each song and played each one perfectly. Near the end of the show they talked about their rumored hiatus and eliminated all rumors, stating that they would be playing shows until they were 75. After their setlist they came back out and did a six-song encore, containing a couple hits and couple deep cuts. After closing with the rest of the show off with Hit Or Miss, they left the stage to screams for another encore but sadly didn't come back. I waited outside for about an hour and got my copy of Stay Gold signed by all of them.

This was one of the best shows I've ever been to. It featured two of my favorite bands from my favorite label and a really good opening band. The crowd was wild for the show and it only added to the energy of the show.

giving chase deserves better than drive thru. they are a workhorse of a band. i've seen them open for much bigger names then they are and blow them off the stage.

I like GC too but its going a little far to say they deserve better than DTR. They were the opening band on this show and that's like saying they were better than the DTR bands. I only saw the last few songs of their set and they were good but not better than MT or NFG!

your kidding me. you were probably outside tryin to score pix with the drive thru bands when gc played their set. they were tight as hell, just as good as the drive thru bands. their always amazing and they dont have to play to the crowd like rockstars to do it. i saw them open for the ataris and they were better than them to. maybe next time you should stay inside and support the smaller bands who play their hearts out and deserve to make it as much if not more than the headliners.
