Thanks for the mail on the former President, the late Hugh Desmond Hoyte.

While many of us would not agree with some of the views expressed in the mail, one has to give credit to Hoyte as the one who was bold enough to stand up to the likes of Green and Corbin in allowing free and fair election in 1992.

In 1985 when Hoyte took over from Burnham we had the worst rigged election and many of us had Soldiers’ guns turn and pointed at us as the ballot boxes were taken away from us. One has to remember the beating of the British Journalist Jenkins who was beaten along with Comrade CHEDDI at Haslington.

While many  of the Guyanese living overseas have various opinions on the cause of racial problem in Guyana ,one has to go back in history to know that the racial problem started when Indians came as replacement of Africans in the sugar plantation. The African saw the Indians as the ones who will cause them  to have no bargaining power with regards to wages and working conditions as labour was now in abundant. Thus was born the problems of racialism in Guyana, and it continues to raise it’s ugly head through the years. Its hard to forget the  Wismar Episode, and now it seems we are having a continuation.

We proved to ourselves that we can Unite when together we fought the  British for independence, but after we go it some of our African brothers believe that they must continue forever as the world owe them this as a repayment for slavery. Businessmen, especially  Indians do not have a problem with who is in power in Guyana but they want their rights to be protected as outline in the constitution because they are hard  working and own the economic wealth of the country and has a right of it to be protected

The problem would not ceased until we all see ourselves as GUYANESE AND NOT AS  EAST INDIANS AND AFRICANS. We must all work to have a common goal for the country and our intentions must be honest and our criticism must be constructive.

Burnham. Jagan and Hoyte are now history. It is now time for the young bloods to fire Guyana forward.

Best Regards
